Group Begins
Armed Patrols
New York (JTA) — A group cal-
ling itself the Jewish Defense
Organization (JDO) announced
Saturday that it had begun
"armed patrols" in several com-
munities in Nassau and Suffolk
counties in response to a recent
series of attacks on synagogues
and other Jewish-owned proper-
ties.
But Nassau country police offi-
cials told the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency that they had no knowl-
edge of the patrols, and a rabbi of a
synagogue that was damaged last
week in a deliberately-set fire
said his synagogue had not sought
out the aid of the JDO.
"Our leadership is not asking
for help," Rabbi David Artz, of the
South Baldwin Jewish Center
said in a telephone interview. "We
have been taking care of our own
affairs for the past 30 years and
we will continue taking care of
our own affairs for the past 30
years and we will continue taking
care of our own affairs. If we need
some outside help we'll get it."
The JDO patrols follow an
arson attack on the South
Baldwin synagogue and anti-
Semitic vandalism at a Great
Neck, L.I. apartment building
earlier this month.
MKs Reject
`Leaks' Inquiry
Jerusalem (JTA) — A no-
confidence motion by the opposi-
tion right-wing Tehiya Party was
overwhelmingly defeated in the
Knesset last week. The vote was
62-5 with eight abstentions.
Tehiya MK Geula Cohen pre-
sented the motion on grounds that
the government has not ordered
an investigation into allegations
that Minister-Without Portfolio
Ezer Weizman leaked secret in-
formation about Cabinet deliber-
ations during negotiations over
the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty
in 1978.
Weizman was Defense Minister
at the time in the Likud-led gov-
ernment of Premier Menachem
Begin. The alleged leaks were to
New York writer and attorney
Leon Charney, a friend of Weiz-
man, who, according to the
charges passed the information on
to the Carter Administration.
Tehiya was supported by Rabbi
Meir Kahane's extremist Kach
Party, a one-man Knesset faction.
The eight abstentions were all
from left-wing opposition parties
— Mapam, Citizens Rights
Movement (CRM), the Jewish-
Arab Progressive List for Peace,
and the Hadash (Communist)
Party.
