the last one-and-a-half years"
over moving the U.S. Embassy
from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem
and proposed arms sales to the
Arabs, "but we have moved
forward despite disagree-
ments. The disagreements
were not generalized, and the
U.S.-Israel relationship has
grown closer as a result."
Breger read a letter from the
President to the rabbis, con-
gratulating the council on its
55 years of "voluntary, educa-
tional and counseling services
. . . Your community has been
richly blessed by your efforts."
Also cited at the dinner was
Dr. Howard Jacobs, the sup-
porter of the council for many
years and one of the initiators
of the council's program at
Sinai Hospital for ritual cir-
cumcision for Russian Jewish
immigrants.
Rabbi Leizer Levin,
president of the council and
Dr. Jacobs' rabbi for 45 years,
gave an address in Yiddish de-
scribing the purpose of the
council as maintaining the
neshama - Jewish soul - of
the Detroit community.
Rabbi James I. Gordon of
Young Israel of Oak-Woods
was surprised with a warm
tribute by Rabbi Elimelech
Goldberg of Young Israel of
Southfield. A vice president of
the council and 22-year De-
troit resident, Rabbi Gordon
and his wife are making
aliyah in August. He thanked
the audience for its support.

An Apology

The Jewish News deeply
regrets the error in the date
of the Council of Orthodox
Rabbis' dinner which ap-
peared in last week's issue,
and sincerely apologizes for
the inconvenience it caused
the council and dinner
guests.
