nians against whom the
Jewish defendant had sought
to act in self defense. "The in-
justice cries out to heaven,"
Livini told the court.
The debate over the Jewish
terrorists, which is quickly be-
coming a left-right confronta-
tion, has to some extent fo-
cused public debate away from
the prisoner dissatisfaction
and disapproval over the
terms of the exchange which
seems to cut across party lines
and affect Israelis of all politi-
cal hues.
While there is much under-
standing for Defense Minister
Rabin's repeated assertions of
"Ein Brera" (no choice), many
persons nevertheless feel that
the price was too high — espe-
cially the decision to allow
some 600 of the released crim-
inals to remain in Israel, the
West Bank and Gaza.
In the Knesset's Foreign Af-
fairs and Security Committee
this week, Likud Liberal MK
Pinhas Goldstein spoke with
bitter disparagement of two of
the three Israelis released in
the exchange. The two
soldiers, Grof and Sakim, who
along with six Israeli POWs
released in the November
1983 exchange, were captured
without putting up any resis-
tance, according to Goldstein.,
and he urged that they be
court martialed.
Several Knesset members
presented motions for the
agenda, but the Committee
acceded to a government re-
quest that no debate on the
prisoner exchange be held this
week. Monday, the govern-
ment itself will open a debate
on the issue with a formal
statement to the Knesset.
The three released IDF
soldiers returned to Israel
Tuesday, to emotional reu-
nions with their families.
Four other soldiers — three
Jews and a Druze — are still
listed as missing, and Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin prom-
ised that every effort would be
continued to establish their
whereabouts and effect their
return.
The three returnees were
fitted out with new uniforms
aboard the Air Force Boeing
jet bringing them home from
Geneva.
They looked pale after their
three-year incarceration in
Damascus, and tired from
nearly 24 hours of anxious
waiting aboard planes and on
the ground in Geneva, 'where
