Charge Denied
By Scientist

Tel Aviv (JTA)
An Israeli
"senior scientist" Monday dis-
missed as "a lot of nonsense" a
report in the current edition of
Newsweek magazine that Israel
"smuggled" from the United
States a number of Krytron tim-
ing devices which are used for,
among other things, the manufac-
ture of nuclear weapons.
A Defense Ministry aide con-
firmed that a certain number of
Krytrons did reach Israel from the
U.S. between 1979 and 1983,
some of which were used for re-
search and development of con-
ventional weapons. The others
remain in stock, unused, he said.
The devices are also used in the
production of laser equipment.
The scientist, who asked not to
be identified, said the Newsweek
report was "ridiculous" because
there is no need to "smuggle"
Krytrons. He said they could be
purchased freely on the interna-
tional market at a cost of less than
$100 each. No special export
licenses are required, he said. He
added that because they were
cheaply and easily obtainable
from abroad, Israeli firms were
not interested in producing the
devices locally.
The Newsweek report impli-
cated an Israeli businessman,
Arnon Milchan, in the affair. Mil-
chan's family business deals with
chemical, electronic and agricul-
tural equipment. But Milchan,
contacted Monday in Paris where
he is on a business trip, said he
has not been involved in the fam-
ily business for the past twelve
years.
Noting that theNewsweek story
quoted his "brother," Milchan told
reporters, "As far as I know I have
no brother."

Lebanon
`On Its Own'

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin made
clear May 9 that the Christian
population in south Lebanon is on
its own and can no longer rely for
protection on the Israel Defense
Force, now in the final stages of
withdrawal from Lebanon.
An editorial by the Washington
Post also noted that Syria's goal is
"to dominate Lebanon." It added
that the Israelis, "long cursed for
entering and staying so long, are
leaving but are leaving behind a
vacuum the contending Lebanese
tribes are struggling to fill."
The Defense Minister ex-
pressed hope that the Shiite Mos-
lems, the majority population in
South Lebanon, will maintain
peace, law and order despite the
absence of a political agreement
with Israel.
The situation in the security
belt remains precarious. An SLA
soldier and his wife were killed
there May 9, along with a third
person, a woman carrying a suit-
case containing eight kilograms
of high explosives.
Meanwhile, Premier Shimon
Peres reiterated his opposition to
the creation of a special commis-
sion of inquiry into the causes and
conduct of the war in Lebanon.
