Judge Schnelz To Receive JARC Civil Rights Award The Jewish Association for Re- tarded Citizens will bestow its first civil rights award upon Judge Gene Schnelz, judge of the Sixth Circuit Court for the state of Michigan, at the association's 16th annual meeting on June 10 at Temple Emanu-El at 7:30 p.m. Judge Schnelz is a graduate of the National Judicial College and the Detroit College of Law. He is associate professor of the Madonna College Para-Legal Program, a commissioner of the State Bar of Michigan and past president of the Oakland County Bar Association. Judge Schnelz was honored in 1980 by a resolu- tion of both the Senate and House of the Michigan Legislature for his numerous community and civic activities. Neil Shine, senior managing editor and columnist of theDetroit Free Press, will present the keyn- ote address, "The Media and Its Impact On the Rights Of Mentally Retarded Citizens." In addition to his work with the Detroit Free Press, where he began as a copy boy in 1950, Shine hosts Detroit Week in Review on Channel 56. Shine has taught journalism in Detroit-area uni- versities for the past page 20 years and is currently adjunct professor of journalism at Oak- land University, where he teaches a course in media ethics. JARC 1985-1986 officers and directors will be elected at the meeting.
