can take time — sometimes a
year or more. There are three
stages a person goes through
after being victimized, accord-
ing to Granader. The first,
which psychologists call "im-
pact disorganization," in-
volves a disbelief that the
crime actually occurred and
then anger at being vic-
timized. When volunteers
speak to someone in this stage,
they may encounter feelings of
loneliness, depression and
helplessness.
Then there is a struggle
with the consequences of the
act, which tends to bring on
feelings of guilt. "People feel
humiliation, which is mag-
nified because others blame
the victim for what hap-
pened," according to
Granader. "For example, a
husband says to a wife who has
been assaulted, 'Why were you
alone in that parking lot any-
way?' "
Finally, there is "renewal,"
where the victim can take
complete control of his own life
again. This is the stage that
council volunteers aim for
when they make that first
phone call to a traumatized
crime victim.
"No one has complained
about us contacting them,"
Granader says. "And a few
people, after turning down our
initial offer for help, have
called back seeking our serv-
ices." Following the initial
call, council volunteers send a
red-and-white handbill to the
victim which lists tip hotline
number and the hours workers
are on duty. An answering
machine provides a 24-hour
emergency number when the
office is closed.
Dealing with. those who
have been victimized by crim-
inals has been, for the most
part, a sobering experience,
but there have been some op-
timistic moments for
Granader and her staff of vol-
unteers. "We do find people
that, in order to get their emo-
tions out on the table, are
doing some very positive
things," the council coor-
dinator says. "One woman,
who was robbed in a shopping
mall parking lot, enlisted
store owners at the mall in a
campaign for a larger security
force." ❑
