One of the common miscon-
ceptions about the program,
the coordinator finds, is that
people tend to think that it is
geared toward the eco-
nomically disadvantaged.
This simply isn't true.
"Just because a person
doesn't need emergency food
or shelter after a break-in
doesn't mean they don't need
somebody to talk with. That's
what we're there for."
In fact, council volunteers
have been trained specifically
for this by professionals from
Common Ground, a non-profit,
Birmingham-based counsel-
ing agency. They are taught
listening techniques which
make use of emphatic re-
sponses to help draw the vic-
tim out of his personal trauma.
"Most people who have been
victimized have an over-

obtaining contact lists
through area police depart-
ments. The goal, according to
Granader, is to eventually
function as a true hotline,
"having people call us when
they need our services instead
of the other way around."
NCJW flyers have been posted
on police department bulletin
boards throughout Oakland
County and officers have been
instructed to hand additional
flyers to those who might want
to contact the agency.
The police have been very
cooperative, Granader says.
"Policemen generally don't
want to do social work — that's
not their job. So they're more
than happy when they can
refer that kind of thing to
somebody else."
The council has contacted
about 100 crime victims, both
male and female, since open-
ing its doors Feb. 11.
