Local Reaction
To Bitburg Criticized
We in New Jewish Agenda were
very pleased to learn that the
leadership of Detroit's Jewish
community had decided to re-
spond to President Reagan's deci-
sion to honor the German dead,
including the SS at Bitburg. We
saw this as an opportunity for the
Jewish Community Council to
catalyze the broader community
and together demonstrate the in-
dignation and outrage of many
citizens over the President's ac-
tion.
We were chagrined to find that
this opportunity to mobilize the
Jewish community and to bring it
together with other elements of
Metropolitan Detroit to express
their feelings of outrage became
an "in house" media event. Hold-
ing the rally inside the Veterans
Memorial Building made certain
that few people other than the
media would be aware of it. This
left the entire impact of the event
to the mercy of that media. Thus a
great opportunity for the Jewish
Community Council to catalyze
the general community was lost.
Was making the memorial a
low-keyed "media event" a con-
scious decision, or did it happen
simply by default? It was a shame
that David Lebenbom's very apt
and pertinent remarks did not
reach an audience ten times the
size and reprsenting the entire
community. Finally, was the ab-
sence of a Holocaust survivor on
the platform also the result of our
desire to be low-keyed?

The tgoyishe' mentalty of for-
give and forget is asserting itself
following Reagan's honoring the
Nazi monsters and equating them
with the victims. It is most notice-
able in the letters appearing in
publications and newspapers
throughout our land from re-
spectable and articulate people
who think it is so charitably
Christian to be able to put aside.
the memories of the atrocities of
World War II after only 40 years.
Jews, however, are taught not
only to remember Amalek but to
destroy it; that we make a better,
healthier world by facing evil, not
ignoring it .. .

paign contributors will take place
Wednesday in the home of David
