because it came down to liv-
ing your work."
There was at least one fun-
ny incident that happened on
the London-based set. When
Hill's wife came to visit him
on location, Streisand, dressed
as a young man, reached out
to shake hands, but was
afraid that Rachel might not
shake hands back.
Hill said he looked at
"Yentl" as a comedy. "Bar-
bra thought the movie lent it-
self to the liberation of wo-
men," Hill said. "She wanted
to pursue an intellectual life,
proving that women can also
think. But to me the basic
thing was the masquerade."
"There was also a scene in
which I was walking up the
steps with her, and I was tell-
ing her end advising her
about their first night alone
together," Hill said. "And
right in the middle of the
scene, we broke up laughing.
We shot it four or five times."
Hill said that his religious
life does have an influence on
his acting.
"I get a real sharp perspec-
tive about my parts because
of a certain kind of religious
thinking I have," he said.
"Religious life gives you a
perspective you've never had
before. If you just choose to
live in the world of show busi-
ness day and night, you lose
your objectivity. But reli-
gious life is extremely impor-
tant in assessing the roles
you play."
Hill also said that there is
indeed a scholarly reference
to acting in the Gemora.
Hill won't say how old he
is. "Jack Benny used to say
he's over 39. Well just say
I'm over 40."
Hill said that he's noticing
a great deal of interest in his
religious beliefs from other
actors.
"Actors whom I speak
with today have a much dif-
ferent point of view than they
used to. Twenty years ago,
you mention religion, and
they'd look at you and say,
`Come on, get with it.' Today
everybody in my business
knows my story and the in-
itiative is always taken by
them when we meet. They're
eager to find out what it's all
about, and what satisfaction
there is in it. Barbra Streis-
and was even interested in it.
"She once said that she
was striving to reach the top
of the mountain, and when
she reached the top of the
mountain, she looked around
and saw there wasn't
anything there. This is the
feeling I had. I reached a
saturation point in acting
where I was asking what can
I do with myself now. And
now there's no way to
describe what I do and how I
live unless you do it or live it.
Because now it's a life of hap-
piness, not just an act." 11]
