Peres Ahead,
Poll Shows

RODNICK BROS.
772-4350

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Premier
Shimon Peres continues to forge
ahead as the most popular choice
for Prime Minister, according to a
public opinion poll published in
last Friday's Maariv.
The poll, taken by the Modiin
Ezrachi Research Institute, gives
Peres 47.9 percent of the vote
against 7.3 percent for his
runner-up and present deputy,
Yitzhak Shamir. The January
quiz gave Peres 42.4 percent and
Shamir 8.6 percent.
Yitzhak Rabin has also forged
ahead as choice for Defense
Minister, gaining 49.1 percent (up
from 44.4 percent in January),
against Ariel Sharon with 13.9
percent (14.7 percent in January).
In another poll taken by the
Pori Public Opinion ReSearch In-
stitute of Israel and published in
Haaretz, 37 percent of those asked
expressed themselves in favor of
including Palestinians in any
peace negotiations (as against
only 15.4 percent who were in
favor of Palestinian representa-
tion in the Geneva talks ten years
ago).
Asked if they were in favor of a
meeting between official govern-
ment representatives with PLO
leader Yassir Arafat, 26.6 percent
said yes, compared to only 16.6
percent when asked the same
question in 1975.

Israel Warned
On Nukes

Washington (JTA) — The
United States has warned Israel
indirectly against deploying nu-
clear weapons in its defensive
arsenal. The warning came ear-
lier this month as State Depart-
ment deputy Spokesman Edward
Djerejian said he could not con-
firm reports that Israel has put up
Jerico missiles, which reportedly
have the capability to carry nu-
clear warheads.
Djerejian added that President
Reagan, in a statement on U.S.
nuclear policy in July 1981, stated
that "We have urged Israel, as we
have urged all other non-nuclear
weapon states, to adhere to the
non-proliferation treaty and to
place all of its nuclear activities
under International Atomic
Energy Agency safeguards."
While Israel has not signed the
non-proliferation treaty, it has
always maintained that it will not
be the first to introduce nuclear
weapons into the Middle East.
