THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS W ms OM III IMP IMO CLIPPERY $4 OFF ANY SERVICE Brazilian Jews `Losing Faith' Sao Paulo (JTA) — An internal report by a leader of the Brazilian Jewish community to the World Jewish Congress (WJC) says that the 160,000 member community ha:3 "lost its vigor, its institutions a ailing, assimilation is increas- > i g and lack of interest and apathy are constantly becoming worse." The assessment by Abrahao Faermann, vice president of the Confederacao Israelita do Brasil, the repesentative body of Brazi- lian Jewry and the WJC affiliate `? in Brazil, found that the Jewish community did not escape the general climate of sadness and uncertainty into which the coun- try was thrown following the death of President Tancredo Neves. To this, he said, the specific problems and concerns of the Jewish community must be added. The Faermann report char- acterizes the Brazilian Jewish community as "politically lacking in discipline" and describes the ef- forts made by the Confederacao, c, headed by its president, Benno Milnitzky, to formulate and carry-out an effective Jewish pol- icy line. Zionism-Racism Resolution Hit New York (JTA) — A group of Christian leaders urged the United Nations Monday to recon- sider "the falsehood promulgated in its 1975 resolution declaring Zionism to be a form of racism," urged Christians to rid them- selves of prejudice and hostility "that have been alive among Christians for centuries." A statement from the National Christian Leadership Conference for Israel, entitled "Forty Years Later: Christians Speak Out on Israel and Zionism," declared: "As we commemorated the 40th an- niversary of the liberation of Europe and the rescue of the sur- vivors of the concentration camps, we send an urgent message to our Christian brothers and sisters: Give special consideration to the meaning of Israel in the thought, faith and life of the Jewish people throughout their long history. Charging that the Zionist-is- racism resolution is "a lie" the statement declared: "We see it as urgent that Christians speak out against the vicious anti-Semitism that hides under the cloak of anti-Zionism . . . In the name of morality and truth, we call upon members of the United Nations to repudiate its resolution which de- clared Zionism to be a form of ra- cism." Named To Post Washington (JTA) — Elliott Abrams, Assistant Secretary of State for Humanitarian Affairs, has been nominated by President Reagan to be Assistant Secretary fo Inter-American Affairs. He re- placesLanghorne Motley, who resigned as head of the Latin American bureau.
