WHAT HAVE YOU DONE
FOR ME LATELY?

MEA/Detroit thinks that's a
perfectly good question . .

MEA

DFT

SALARY

Lobbied and won a 9% increase in
state education budget.

RETIREMENT

Lobbied and won house passage
of 8% increase, guaranteed 3%
COLA adjustments, paid depen-
dent health care, 30-and-out plan,
OPTIONAL 4% tax-sheltered con-
tribution.

CERTIFICATION

Testified against and halted a legis-
lative move that would have re-
quired every teacher to be recer-
tified every five years.

Stood side-by-side with adminis-
trators and other anti-teacher
forces to allow the attack on your
certification.

SECURITY

Initiated a plan to provide special
state funding to improve school
security.

Denied a security program existed
in Detroit schools, then said it was
not the union's job to try to correct it.

Only one salary increase in the last
five years and that cancelled out
by loss of 10 days pay and another
week's pay delayed because
negotiators FAILED to bargain ad-
justed pay schedule.
Fought all retirement improve-
ments.

BARGAINING AGENT FOR DETROIT TEACHERS!

Paris (JTA) — Klaus Barbie,
the "butcher of Lyon," is physi-
cally and mentally fit to stand
trial, medical experts have told
investigating magistrate Chris-
tian Riss. Barbie, the Lyons Ges-
tapo chief during World War II, is
expected to go on trial this fall on
half a dozen charges of "crimes
against humanity."
These charges include the de-
portation of 41 Jewish children
who had been arrested at a Jewish
children's home in Izieu in 1944,
the deportation of 90 members of
the Lyons Jewish community, and
the deportation of 650 people on
the last train to leave the city. The
children and the adults were sent
to death camps in the final days of
the war. Barbie cannot be tried for
murdering French resistance
fighters because murder is
covered by the statute of limita-
tions according to French law.
The three experts who exam-
ined Barbie 12 times, sometimes
for hours on end, reported that he
"shows no remorse or regret" and
refuses to discuss his wartime ac-
tivities. A French paper in Lyons
last weekend quoted extensively
from the report prepared by
psychiatrists Daniel Genin and
Jacques Vedrinne and clinical
psychologist Didier Weber. The

three had been appointed by the
court to examine Barbie's physi-
cal and mental condition.
In their report, drawn up a few
months ago, the three said that,
Barbie "is in relatively good con?,
dition in spite of an important
weight loss since his detention" in
February 1984 when he was
brought back to France from
Bolivia. The three experts exam-
ined Barbie at the Saint Joseph
prison where he is being held. 5
In a related developmen4
Nazi-hunter Serge Klarsfeld an-
nounced last week that his wife
Beatte will appeal directly to the
people of Paraguay to obtain in-
formation on the whereabouts of
Josef Mengele, the 'notorious Au-
schwitz death camp doctor.
Klarsfeld said his wife will go to
Asuncion, the capital of
Paraguay, next weekend for a
television appearance during
which she will present a two-a-
half-minute film showing at-
rocities committed by Mengele,
and a description of him. Mengel€
if alive, is 74 years old. He became,
a Paraguayan citizen in 1959 but
was stripped of his citizenship in
1979 under international pres-
sure. Paraguayan officials claim
that they have no knowledge of
his whereabouts.

ADL Profiles Extremists

New York (JTA) — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith (ADL) released a report
Monday detailing the background
and activities of "an underground
network of armed racists and
anti-Semites" employing gangs-
ter and terrorist tactics in what
the ADL describes as the first at-
tempt by right-wing extremists in
this century to overthrow the
United States government by vio-
lent revolution.
According to the report, pre-
pared by the fact-finding depart-
ment of the ADL's civil rights di-
vision, the network consists of the
"Order," the "Aryan Nation" and
a pseudo-Christian racist move-
ment called "Identity."
These and a loose affiliation of
like-minded groups in the U.S.,
Canada and West Germany are
known collectively as the "Iden-
tity" movement. The ADL esti-
mates their total membership in
the 2,500-3,000 range.
The propaganda and violence of
these groups is directed primarily
against Jews, blacks and His-
panics. They also view with ex-
treme hostility the U.S. govern-
ment, its judicial system and law
enforcement agencies. Their ul-
timate aim is the overthrow of the
U.S. government — which they
label "ZOG" for "Zionist Occupa-
tion Government" and its re-
placement by "a nationalist racist
state."
The criminal violence of the
network, which has resulted so far
in more than two dozen arrests in
13 states, includes bank and ar-
mored car robberies involving
more than $4 million, counterfeit-
ing operations, shoot outs with

FBI agents, three murdei-s and a
synagogue bombing.
The ADL report noted that,'
"Paradoxical as it may seem, this,J
outbreak of right-wing crimina,
violence on the West Coast comes
at a time — and is largely a conse-
quence — of a decline in the
strength and influence of the far-
right hate movement in the
United States."

Interpol Help
On Mengele

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel has
asked Interpol, the international
police agency, to arrest and hand
over to Israeli authorities Dr.
Josef Mengele, the Auschwitz,
death camp doctor.
The decision to seek the assis-
tance of Interpol was taken by the
special inter-ministerial commit-
tee set up in Jerusalem specific':
cally to bring Mengele to justice.
Justice Minister Moshe Nissim
announced in the Knesset last
Tuesday that the government and
the World Zionist Organization
are jointly offering a $1 million
reward for information leading to
the capture of Mengele to stand'
trial in Israel.
Mengele has been reported liv-
ing in Paraguay under the protec-
tion of the military government
there. He is held responsible for
the deaths and crippling of hun-
dreds of thousands of Jews at Aui
schwitz on whom he performed'
inhuman medical experiments.
The reward will be in effect for
two years.
