Anti-Semitic Vandalism

New York (JTA) — A pair of
suburban New York communities
reported acts of anti-Semitic van-
dalism over the weekend.
A fire at the South Baldwin
Jewish Center in Baldwin, L.I.
Sunday afternoon resulted in
heavy damage to the temple's
sanctuary. Hundreds of prayer
books and prayer shawls were de-
stroyed in the blaze, which offi-
cials said showed signs of deliber-
ate intent.
In an unrelated incident, slo-
gans such as "Jews Die," "Jews for
Sale" and "We Kill Jews" were
found scrawled on the stairwell
walls and ceilings of an apart-
ment building in Great Neck, L.I.
where many of the residents are
Orthodox Jews.
Det. Carl Mickle, of the Great
Neck Police, said the graffiti ap-
peared to be the work of teena-

House Unit
OKs Hate Bill

Washington (JTA) — A bill re-
quiring the Federal Bureau of In-
vestigation (FBI) to collect data
on crimes motivated by racial,
religious or ethnic prejudice was
unanimously approved last week
by the House Judiciary Sub-
Committee on Criminal Justice.
The Hate-Crime Statistic Act
would require the Attorney Gen-
eral to issue an annual report
summarizing the data on such
crimes starting in 1986.
"It will give us a better picture
of the extent" of such crimes,
David Brody, Washington repre-
sentative of the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith (ADL) said
Friday. He said it would also help
to "focus public attention" on the
situation.
Brody said that the ADL would
continue to collect information on
anti-Semitic incidents for its an-
nual report for 1985. But he said
he was uncertain whether the
ADL would issue annual reports
after this year since the Justice
Department report would be more
extensive.

Rabbis May
Face Charges

Jerusalem (JTA) — Gush
Emunim Rabbis Moshe Levinger
and Eliezer Waldman may still
face legal proceedings in connec-
tion with the Jewish terror group,
according to the Ministry of Jus-
tice.
The two were interrogated at
the time on their involvement
with the group, following a state-
ment to the police, by Menachem
Livni, the leading defendant in
the current Jewish terror trial.
Livni named the rabbis among
the people who encouraged and
approved retaliatory attacks on
Arabs. However, the police inves-
tigation at the time did not find
sufficient evidence to bring the
two men to trial.
The Ministry now says that the
question of the veracity of the con-
fessions of Livni and the other ac-
cused is one of the subjects the
Jerusalem District court will
have to examine. In other words,
if the court decides that those con-
fessions are indeed true, legal
proceedings against the two rab-
bis could be started.

Five Years Of
Saving Books

Amherst, Mass. — The Na-
tional Yiddish Book Center will
celebrate its fifth anniversary
June 9. In five years, the center
has collected 350,000 discarded
Yiddish volumes.
In Detroit, the Sholem
Aleichem Institute collects un-
wanted Yiddish books for the na-
tional- center.
