bring the synagogue down to
an intimate size. They become
an extended family, a support
group to share problems and
celebrate simchas."
Table Talk is another pro-
gram that networks families
and encourages home obser-
vance. Forty participating
families receive a weekly flyer
which includes Shabbat
blessings and songs, and a
child's version of the weekly
Sedrah portion with clever ac-
tivities and topics for discus-
sion.
Table Talk embellishes Fri-
day night dinners, encourag-
ing lively discussions on
Jewish values and themes.
Chairman Elaine Burton
encourages families to invite
other families for Shabbat
dinner. By "pairing and shar-
ing" Shabbat, families who
want to learn more home
ritual will be taught by obser-
vant families.
Burton also coordinated the
FLEP's first family retreat,
held in 1983 at the Butzel Con-
ference Center at Camp Maas.
Five families enjoyed a mean-
ingful, completely observant
Shabbat and became a close-
knit group within the larger
Shaarey Zedek community.
More retreats will be planned.
The FLEP has also reached
outside Shaarey Zedek to in-
clude expectant families in "So
You're Going To Be A Jewish
Parent?" a three-week course.
Chairmen Dr. Lennie and
Sharon Rosen, themselves
parents of small children,
realized there were no com-
munity parenting classes that
offered a Jewish view of birth,
naming ceremonies, parent-
ing values or a Jewish parents
support group.
The course was well
attended and very positive,
Mrs. Rosen says, "We're plan-
ning a reunion in early sum-
mer for all the parents. Their
babies should be at least two
months old by then."
During the past three years,
Appelman estimates the
FLEP has reached more than
1,500 persons through attrac-
tive and well-received pro-
grams. Many more ideas are
on the drawing board, focusing
on the needs of single parents
and single individuals, new
methods of bringing Judaism
into the home, more written
materials for parents and
children, short-term work-
shops teaching adults specific
rituals such as benching and
davening.
