year to inaugurate the scrap-
book.
Linda Cohen, mother of sec-
ond grader Lauren, echoes
many parents who have par-
ticipated and gained greatly
from the Rainbow Connection
workshops and literature.
"Even though I grew up in a
fairly traditional honie, I
didn't know how to do any-
thing myself. Rainbow Con-
nection has given our family a
feeling of roots and guidance."
Lauren Bruss, PTO co-
chairman and family life edu-
cation committee member, ex-
plains that families are
encouraged to add to their
family home observance little
by little. "As they attend
workshops and classes, they
pick up more ideas. One or two
new ideas might fit very com-
fortably into their life style.
This year it might be lighting
Shabbos candles; next year it
might be attending Saturday
services."
Appelman reinforces this
idea. "We take people from
where they are. We do not
judge them and say they
should do this or that. We are
here to help and offer informa-
tion. We see Judaism as a lad-
der and encourage families to
take one rung at a time. We
hope their Jewish commit-
ment will be ever-evolving."
Other family life programs
augment the Rainbow Con-
nection and offer Shaarey
Zedek's varied family con-
stituencies knowledge and
camaraderie.
One of the synagogue's best
kept secrets is the Chavurah
program. Chairman Susan
Kaufman has seen this
extended-family program
grow since it came under the
