people good for the develop-
ment of a system involving the
concept of justice for all?'
"I am able to put aside the
facts in a particular case, be-
cause, oddly enough, for our
purposes the facts are not
what is relevant. What is re-
levant are the general princi-
ples we are going to end up
living with. And those princi-
ples, like it or not, emerge
from these kinds of cases."

Joint Building Authority,
in the wake of last De-
cember's Nativity scene
brouhaha, passed a resolu-
tion banning all displays
or symbols on the build-
ing's property.
Simon, who called the
City Council's handling of
the matter "extremely in-
ept," says he understands
the security problems such
a gathering would pose,
but that the consequences
in turning down the neo-
Nazi request may be even
greater. "If the City of De-
troit is taken to court and
if the City of Detroit loses,
the City of Detroit and its
citizens may wind up pay-
ing monetary damages di-
rectly into the coffers of
the S.S. Action group."
A 1981 rally by the
group in downtown De-
troit's Kennedy Square
ended in a melee between
the neo-Nazis and anti-
Nazi protesters. Nine
people were arrested.
Similar demonstrations
have marred Israel Inde-
pendence Day celebra-
tions in Oak Park and
Southfield in recent years.
Neo-Nazi rallies, and
the ACLU's involvement
with them, are not unique
to the Detroit area. Nazi
leader Frank Collin led a
"victory rally" in front of
the Kluczynski Federal
Building in the heart of
downtown Chicago seven
years ago after canceling
plans to march through
Skokie, Ill., a heavily-
Jewish Chicago suburb. In
the wake of the Chicago
demonstration, the ACLU
lost about 50,000 mem-
bers, most of them
Jewish. ❑

Among all her possessions, an elegant woman would
rank a very few as irreplaceable assets. Her Lassale
quartz watch, sensuously slim, perfectly designed,
delicately illuminated with diamonds, would surely be
one. Choose all gold-tone with four diamonds. Or
gold-tone with either white or brown dial and six
diamonds. Lassale. The heritage is obvious.
