European Jews
`Vulnerable'

New York (JTA) — While not-
; ing that Western European Jewry
L, was reviving its heritage and
' identity, three European Jewish
7 leaders also expressed concern for
their vulnerable Jewish com-
munities at a session last week of
the American Jewish Commit-
tee's 79th annual meeting, at the
Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New
York.
The leaders, Dr. Ady Steg, of
, Paris, president of the Alliance Is-
raelite Universelle (France); Tul-
lia Zevi, of Rome, president of the
Union of Jerusalem Communities
in Italy; and Samuel Toledano, of
-, Madrid, president of the Federa-
tion of Jewish Communities in
I Spain, agreed that issues and
events such as domestic politics,
Israel and their European roots
had affected European Jewry to-
, day.
In examining French Jewry,
• Steg, former president of CRIF,
the Central French Jewish coor-
• dinating body, said: "The
j Ashkenazi-Sephardi encounter
has brought about an unprece-
dented renewal of Jewish cultural
activity in France. For the past 15
years and especially after the
• election of President Mitterrand,
Jews have become more involved
in the country's political life, both
individually and as a commu-
nity."
I
But, Steg added, "The majority
of Jews do not participate in
Jewish community life and there
is no external restraint or curb to
assimilation."

CELLULAR CAR PHONES

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The United
Nations, holding Israel responsi-
ble for the actions of the South
Lebanon Army (SLA), has pro-
tested to Israel over the detention
by the SLA of five soldiers of the
Dutch contingent serving in the
United Nations Interim Force in
Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The Dutch soldiers, detained
last Saturday near Jebel Batzil,
just north of the Israel border,
were released at the intervention
of the IDF, but their weapons
were confiscated.
They were interrogated at SLA
headquarters, apparently about
an incident that occurred more
than two-and-a-half months ago
in which an SLA soldier was
wounded.
The SLA, commanded by Gen.
Antoine Lehad, is armed and fi-
nanced by Israel and is expected
to help maintain order in the se-
curity belt just north of the Israel
border after the last IDF units
leave Lebanese soil early next
month.

Apartheid Hit

Chicago (JTA) — A resolution
deploring apartheid and demand-
ing that the South African gov-
ernment treat all its citizens
equally has been adopted by the
Public Affairs committee (PAC) of
the Jewish United Fund of
Chicago, a coalition of 34 major
Jewish organizations in the

Chicago area.
