Asked if she is making any special preparations, she joked that she's trying to convince her mother to buy her some new clothes. But, she added, she's doing some research on her own about Germany and its people. Steve said he is think- ing of things he can show his West German visitors and try- ing to make some extra money. Steve has been to Israel, having celebrated his bar mitzvah at the Western Wall. They both look forward to the trip as a learning experi- ence, but expect to have a lot of fun too. Weiner said he is excited by the teens' enthusiasm, and hopes the program will be a success. To date, 11 have reg- istered for the trip. There are openings for four more. Weiner, who directs 35 area BBYO chapters comprised of MOO youth age 14-18, said the idea for such a youth exchange came out of the Versailles summit meeting in 1982, when the U.S. and western European governme•ts hoped to develop a program to expose children born after the post- war period to contemporary Europe so theiricnowledge of these countries would not be based on notions of the past. BBYO was the only Jewish youth organization to attend meetings about the exchange, Weiner said. At the same time, West Germany proved to be the most anxious to put the program into effect. President Reagan's Interna- tional Youth Exchange Initia- tive kicked in funds as well as the U.S. Information Agency, and by last fall plans were finalized. Beth Katkowsky Alan Freedman, BBYO's national director of programs and publications and the ad- ministrator of the youth ex- change project, represented BBYO at the initial meetings. He came to Detroit in January and developed the brochure for prospective participants. The Washington office of BBYO was charged with pick- ing a region to pilot the proj- ect, Weiner said. Michigan was chosen for a number of reasons. "The Michigan program is one of the strongest in the country," based on member- ship, continuity, leadership and programming, Weiner said. Consistent growth was another consideration. Weiner said that despite having chap- ters in Grand Rapids, Windsor and throughout the metropoli- tan area, the region is pretty Steve Nakisher much "one-city centered," that the membership is concen- trated mainly in the Detroit area. Finally, Weiner's repu- tation had a lot to say for the Michigan region. He said he's a veteran staffer — "I've been around a lot of years" — and he's been to Israel three times. His experience in taking groups abroad also proved to be a point in favor of the region being elected to take on the project. BBYO's European partner in the pilot project, the Euro- pean Exchange Services, has
