TRUNKS

Congressman
Converts

New York — New York Repub-
lican Lew Lehrman, 46, converted
from Judaism to Roman Catholi-
cism last week, according to
Newsweek. Lehrman, who unsuc-
cessfully ran for governor of New
York- in 1982 and has been men-
tioned as a potential Presidential
candidate, felt that "religion and
a person's faith are part of the pri-
vate domain. It's not something
that belongs in the political do-
main at all."
"If Lew Lehrman had any cre-
dibility with the Jewish commu-
nity before, he certainly has lost
it," said Rabbi Binyarnin Walfish,
executive vice president of the
Rabbinical Council of America.
Democratic media consultant
David Garth believes Lehrman's
conversion could do more political
damage than a divorce. "People
don't understand basic changes at
that stage of life," said Garth. "If
it was a political move, I think it
was a bad one."
Lehrman, however, stated that
his conversion would not have any
effect on his political views.

Witnesses Of
Nazis Wanted

New York — The U.S. Justice
Department has asked the assis-
tance of the World Jewish Con-
gress in the investigation of the
activities of Nazi-backed Lithua-
nian police units operating in
Western Belorussia and Eastern
Lithuania during the Second
World War.
The WJC is attempting to lo-
cate persons who were present at
any time during 1942 and 1943 in
the districts of Smorgon and/or
Oshmyany (Asmena), presently
in Grodno Oblast, Western Be-
lorussian S.S.R. Specifically, wit-
nesses are being sought from the
villages of Sol or Soly, Vasiuki,
Swieciany, Mikhalishki,
Kiemelszki, Bystrzyca, and the
nearby village of Malye Yakin-
tany, in the district of Ostrovets.

Jewish Congress, One Park Ave-
nue, New York 10016.

Hungarians OK
Codex Exhibition

Budapest (JTA) — The Hunga-
rian government has for the first
time offered the rare Maimonides
Codex for public exhibition, fol-
lowing a request from the World
Jewish Congress and the inter-
vention of the Central Board of
Hungarian Jews.
The Maimonides Codex is one of
the most famous illustrated He-
brew manuscripts in existence.
Currently part of the David
Kaufman collection of the
Budapest Army, the manuscript
is of Maimonides' Mishneh Torah
and is of Italian origin dating
back to approximately 1482-1520.
The Hungarian government
granted permission for the
Maimonides Codex to be ex-
hibited under the auspices of
UNESCO.
