Israelis Mark
Memorial Day
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A brief cere-
mony at the Western Wall in
Jerusalem last week ushered in
Memorial Day, a 24-hour period 1
on the eve of Israel's Indepen-
dence Day in which those killed
while fighting for the Jewish state
are mourned and remembered.
In an address at the wall,
President Chaim Herzog noted
that the ancient stones witnessed
the destruction of the Temple
some 2,000 years ago and that
"the fallen in Israel's wars did not
fall this time on the altar of de-
struction but rather for rebirth,
existence and life."
Flags all over Israel flew at half
mast last week, while at 11 a.m.
the wail of sirens throughout the
country signaled the start of
memorial services at cemeteries
and monuments to fallen soldiers.
In the 37 years of Israel's exist-
ence, 13,035 men and women
have been killed in combat. This
figure includes the 653 soldiers
who have lost their lives in Leba-
non to date.
