Rabbis' Annual Dinner
Will Honor Dr. Jacobs

Dr. Howard Jacobs has been
named honoree of the 55th an-
niversary banquet of the Council
of Orthodox Rabbis. to be held
May 20 at the Renaissance Bal-
lroom, Westin Hotel. Cocktails
will be served at 6 p.m.
Dr. Jacobs will be honored "in
recognition of his manifold activi-
ties and philanthropic deeds for
the Jewish community," accord-
ing to Council president Rabbi
Leizer Levin and dinner chair-
man Paul Borman.
Dr. Jacobs, chief of urology at
Sinai Hospital, was Sinai Chief of
Staff from 1979 to 1981. He also
had staff appointments at
Harper-Grace Hospitals,
Detrot-Macomb Hospitals and
Troy Beaumont Hospital.
Dr. Jacobs worked with the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis in es-
tablishing a brit milah program
at Sinai for Russian immigrants.
The Council, comprised of 24
rabbis representing synagogues
and educational institutes
throughout the metropolitan
area, Ann Arbor, Windsor and To-
ledo, conducts a Beth Din (court)
and houses a Judaic library.
It supervises all matters per-
taining to kashrut, shochtim,
dairy products, caterers, slaugh-
ter houses and retail meat dealers
and community institutions. Af-
fidavits are also provided for
people going to Israel to be mar-
ried. The rabbinical court super-
vises adoptions by Jewish
families, conducts conversions ac-
cording to Halachah, deals with
marriage and divorce problems
and handles litigations.
A free monthly newsletter on
kashrut data called the Kosher-
gram is produced by the Merkaz,
the layman's association of the
Council. The Council will send a
mashgiach to any home at no
charge to provide assistance and
guidance in converting to kas-
hrut.

free counseling service, available
1 to 4 p.m. Monday and Thursday
by appointment. Necessary refer-
rals will be made and confiden-
tiality will be observed.

Luncheon Nears

Reservations are still being
taken for Beth Shalom Sister-
hood's annual donor luncheon to
be held noon May 16 in the
synagogue.
Guest speaker will be Sylvia
Glover, comparison shopper for
Channel 7's "Good Afternoon De-
troit" program.

Blood Donations
Taken Next Week

Red Cross bloodmobiles will be
in the community next week to
take blood donations.
On Monday and Tuesday, from
5 to 10 p.m., a bloodmobile will be
at Temple Emanu-El. For ap-

MSU Slates
Israel Trip

The fifth annual summer trip to
Israel sponsored by the Depart-
ment of Social Science at Michi-
gan State University is scheduled
for June 20-Aug. 1. The trip is de-
signed for undergraduate stu-
dents seeking to fulfill social sci-
ence general education require-
ments abroad.

Cancer Research
Benefits From Show

City of Hope Helen Rosenberg
Cancer Fighters will host a
mother and daughter, dessert
fashion show at 7:30 p.m. May 20
at Temple Beth El.
Proceeds from the show, which
will feature activewear, chil-
dren's clothes and clothing and
hair fashions, will go for research
into cancer and other diseases.
There will be prizes, and
everyone is welcome. There is an
admission charge.
