on Independence Day at the Car-
mel Beach cemetery in Haifa. Pvt.
Baruch Stern, 20, of Kiryat
Shmuel, died of wounds he suf-
fered three weeks ago in a bomb
= explosion at the Kasmiye bridge
over the Litani River in south
Lebanon.
In a related development, four
border policemen were injured in
south Lebanon last Thursday,
when light arms fire was directed
at an IDF outpost in the Tyre
area, the arm _ y spokesman said.
According to reports from Be-
irut, Palestinian and Moslem
militias were slaughtering Chris-
tians in Sidon, which Israel had
evacuated a month ago, and the
Christian villages lying to its
East.
Houses were being pillaged and
churches and schools burned to
the ground. Residents were said to
be fleeing in panic eastwards to
the area of Jezzine, held by the
SLA.
Christian radio stations in Be-
) irut complained bitterly that the
Lebanon army was doing nothing
to stop the slaughter, merely
standing by and observing the
carnage and destruction.

Two Injured
On Holiday

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A pair of Is-
raeli men were injured last
Thursday during the Indepen-
dence Day holiday.
Aharon Hazut, a 30-year-old
resident of the Katif region near
the Gaza Strip, was stabbed sev-
eral times in the Khan Yunis
Market in the Gaza district.
Hazut was reported in fair condi-
tion Friday. Security forces im-
posed a curfew in the area while a
search was carried out, but no ar-
rests were made.
In Kiryat Malachi, a police sap-
per was wounded slightly when a
bomb which he was attempting to
diffuse went. off. The bomb was
discovered by a local resident who
noticed a suspicious looking plas-
tic bag near a tank of cooking gas.

Struck Down

Toronto (JTA) — The Supreme
Court of Canada has ruled
unanimously that the Federal
Lords Day Act is invalid as a vio-
lation of religious freedom.
The Lords Day Act, requiring
Sunday closings for retailers, has
been in force since 1906. Some
provinces, like Ontario, have re-
placed it with provincial legisla-
tion of a secular nature still re-
quiring Sunday observance but
not on a Christian religious basis.
It is not yet clear whether the
Supreme Court ruling also in-
validates these secular statutes,
observers said.
