Synagogue Music Premier

The first concert performance
in the United States of recently
rediscovered 18th-Century
synagogue music from Italy and
the Netherlands will highlight a
concert sponsored by the Flint
Jewish Community on Sunday at
7:30 p.m. at Cong. Beth Israel, as
its contribution to the city's Basi-
cally Bach Festival.
The concert will be under the
direction of Cantor Sholom Kalib,
professor of music at Eastern
Michigan University and cantor
at the synagogue. Cantor Kalib's
setting of the 150th Psalm will
conclude the program.
The 18th century synagogue
music was originally written for
the famous Portuguese
Synagogue of Amsterdam, and for
the 16th Century synagogue in
Casale Monferrato, near Milan.
After 200 years of neglect, the
music was rediscovered and pre-
pared for modern performance by
Prof. Israel Adler, director of the
Jewish Music Research Center in

Israel. The Italian music will be p
erformed in Flint from hand-
made copies.
The synagogue music will be
sung by Cantor Louis Danto of To-
ronto, who has sung portions of it
on Canadian radio.
Cantor Danto will be joined by
the University of Michigan-Flint
Chamber Singers, directed by
Carolyn Mawby, and a chamber
orchestra of 15 Flint musicians.
For tickets, call the Flint
Jewish Federation, (313) 767-
5922.
