Sudanese Plan
Airlift Inquiry

Paris (JTA) — Sudan's new
military rulers Tuesday named a
colonel in the now disbanded
• State Security Department as the
man responsible for having per-
• mitted the departure by air of
thousands of Ethiopian Jews to
Israel.
The Military Council now rul-
ing Sudan has said it will open an
inquiry into "The Falasha affair"
and will "severely punish" those
responsible for the airlift used by
thousands of Jewish refugees.
The Middle East News Agency
monitored in Paris Tuesday in a
dispatch from Khartoum named
the man deemed responsible_ for
facilitating the flights as Col. El
Fateh Mohamed Ahmed Arwa.
Basing itself on a report issued by
the trade union of the Sudanese
Civil Aviation Department, the
Egyptian news agency said Arwa
granted special privileges to the
Brussels based Trans European
Airways.
the trade union report is the
first detailed account of the depar-
ture procedure. It says the Ethio-
pian Jews were taken in the early
hours of the morning, between 1
a.m. and 3 a.m., when the airport
was usually deserted, to the spe-
cial area of the Khartoum air
terminal normally reserved for
pilgrims on their way to Saudi
Arabia.
The planes which took them to
Israel via Greece, Italy and Bel-
gium, landed and took off during
this brief time lapse. The report
says there were 28 flights in all.
Between Nov. 20 and Dec. 22
there was a departure every two
days and between Dec. 22 and
Jan. 4 the flights took place on a
daily basis, according to the re-
port.

Orthodox Hear
Plea For Unity

Spring Glen, N.Y. (JTA) — In
an unprecedented appearance be-
fore the national convention of
Orthodox rabbis, Rabbi Alexan-
der Shapiro, president of the Rab-
binical Assembly (the interna-
tional body of Conservative
Judaism), urged that "for the sur-
vival of Judaism in our time" a
common approach be made to
stem the rise of Jewish assimila-
tion in a secular world.
Rabbi Shapiro, of Cong. Ohab
Shalom, South Orange, N.J., em-
phasized that closer cooperation
between the Orthodox, Conserva-
tive and Reform rabbinates would
strengthen religious Judaism in
America, help the state of Israel
and be favorably viewed by
thousands of unaffiliated Jews
who are "turned off to religious
Judaism" by the bickering.
"What becomes profoundly dis-
turbing is the degree to which
over the course of the ages there
has existed among us quarrel-
someness and divisiveness that
brings only tragedy to the Jewish
people," Rabbi Shapiro said. "In
the long run, in order for Judaism
to survive in America, there must
be an outreach to all of the disaf-
fected and the alienated, to all
those thirsty for the word of God,
even if we interpret that word in a
different way."
