Additional U.S. Funds For Israel Debated Washington (JTA) — The State Department said Monday that it hopes to reach a decision soon on whether to provide Israel with the $1.5 billion in additional eco- nomic aid sought by the national unity government headed by Shimon Peres. But State Department deputy spokesman Edward Djerajian would not say whether the deci- sion would come before Secretary of State George Shultz goes to Is- rael next week. He said he could not put a "time frame" on it. "We continue our close dialogue with the government of Israel," Djerajian said. "We hope to be in a position soon to reach a decision." The Reagan Administration has approved $1.8 billion in mili- tary aid to Israel for the 1986 fis- cal year, a $400 million increase, and $1.2 billion in economic aid, the entire $3 billion in grants. But the U.S. has refrained from ap- proving additional economic funds sought by Israel because , 1 Shultz has maintained that Israel has not done enough to solve its economic problems. The House, meanwhile, was scheduled to vote on the Foreign Assistance Bill this week which includes its Foreign Affairs Committee's recommendation that the additional $1.2 billion be - included. Djerajian refused to comment Monday on reports that Peres sent Shultz a letter outlining his eco- nomic program in an effort to meet U.S. conditions. In an inter- view on Kol Israel Radio last week, Peres said his letter con- tained responses to. ten questions posed by Shultz. He said he had "no doubt" that the U.S. will pro- vide the requested aid. Mitterrand Visits Camp === _I....I :T r..- Paris (JTA) — President Fran- cois Mitterrand marked the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concentration camps with a visit Sunday to Struthof, the only death camp which existed in France during World War II. Bareheaded and followed by half a dozen Cabinet ministers, the president walked through the camp for close to an hour. Some 12,000 people, mostly Jews, were killed by the Nazis at Struthof be- tween 1941 and 1945. Mitterrand walked through thick snow to inspect the inmates' barracks and then to one of the four ovens in which the bodies were burned. Twenty former pris- oners and 20 children from local schools dropped bouquets of flow- ers into the ashes in the oven. Mittel.. rand then stood in si- lence in front of the hundreds of graves and the memorial inaugu- rated by Gen. Charles de Gaulle in 1960. Former presidents Georges Pompidou and Valery Giscard d'Estaing had also visited the camp in 1970 and 1980, re- spectively. Sources at the Elysee Palace said that the visit to Sruthof will be the only ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany which Mitterrand will attend. Last year, Mitterrand and West rz‘ German Chancellor Helmut Kohl together attended a ceremony at a military cemetery where German and French soldiers who died dur- ing the battle at Verdun are buried. Their visit marked West European reconciliation. WOODWARD CAMERA, INC. IN THE OLD WORLD CAMERA LOCATION FULL SERVICE - TRAINED STAFF SURPRISE MOM WITH A 35mm AUTOFOCUS! -..
