It referred to the "powerful influence of Jewish Cabinet ministers such as De- , fense Secretary Caspar Wein- berger surrounding Reagan." Weinberger, of course, is not a 1 Jew but a practicing Episcopa- , lian; there are no Jews in the Re- agan Cabinet and no Jews in the , top echelon of the White House staff. The Quick article also described a massive media campaign which , it said American Jews had r launched to remind America of I> the Nazi war crimes and alleged that "the Jewish lobby" domi- nated the American networks and many newspapers. There was anti-Jewish fallout in the U.S., too. A Miami televi- sion station, looking for local ang- I les, sent a camera crew to a German-American tavern in Ft. Lauderdale and for several min- utes aired the views of a group of middle-aged, heavily accented ' German-Americans who strongly endorsed a Reagan visit to Bit- ,- burg and denounced American Jews for trying to damage ' German-American relations. "The Jews are only 2.7 percent of the people in this country," one said, between gulps of beer, "but they have too much power." It has been a traumatic time for American Jews and a bitterly ‘ frustrating one. It is easier to fight overt anti-Semitism than to try to make someone understand 2 an idea. Chief of Staff Donald Regan described the President as "anguished" over the conflict over Bitburg but there was no indica- tion that Mr. Reaan really un- derstood the deep-seated emo- tions that motivated Elie Wiesel ; and so many others he respects and admires to plead with him not to go to Bitburg. The President is not a man ut- terly devoid of sensitivity and compassion as witness his ) authorization for the dramatic airlift of-Ethiopian Jews. He de- plores the Holocaust but he does not understand why it is so utterly important to Jews — and to the human race in general — that the world should never be permitted to forget its revelation of how awful can be man's inhumanity to man. For the American Jewish com- munity, the one warming factor in the Bitburg episode is the wide- spread support for its position dis- played by so many segments of the , population. Jews will not soon 2 forget that 82 members of the U.S. I Senate, including leaders of the President's own political party, I urged Mr. Reagan to cancel the Bitburg visit and 257 of the 434 members of the House of Repre- sentatives signed a letter to Chancellor Kohl. For American Jews and for Americans in general as well as I for the German people there is a serious warning in Bitburg. It is that regardless of how far we ' think we have progressed since 1.945 in establishing a basis of de- cency and sensitivity, there is still a long and difficult road.
