Israeli youngsters have been aiding Ethiopian immigrants adjust to
their new life in Israel.

r

The Jewish Welfare Federation
has launched a month-long fund-
raising effort on behalf of Opera-
tion Moses, the absorption of
Ethiopian Jews in Israel.
Allied Jewish Campaign
Chairmen Stanley D. Frankel and
Robert H. Naftaly announced that
the special, one-time cash appeal
will take place throughout the
month of May. An Operation
Moses gathering for major Cam-
paign contributors is scheduled
for May 22 at the home of Doreen
and David Hermelin.
The month-long appeal is in re-
sponse to the unique absorption
needs of Ethiopian Jewish immig-
rants. There are now nearly
15,000 Ethiopian Jews in Israel.
Frankel and Naftaly said they
have many problems common to
other immigrants, but include a
far higher proportion of children
under 14 without parents. An
added challenge is the transition
from an ancient culture to a con-
temporary Western-style democ-
racy.
The Ethiopian Jews are being
helped by the Jewish Agency,
main beneiciary agency of the
United Jewish Appeal. The UJA,
in turn, is the main overseas/
Israel beneficiary of Detroit's Al-
lied Jewish Campaign.
The Jewish Agency share in the
absorption of Ethiopian Jews will
total $125 million by the end of
fiscal 1985/86, the chairmen said.
After the first year, responsibility
for the newcomers' housing, em-
ployment and other needs will
pass from the Jewish Agency to
the government of Israel. The
Ethiopians, they said, often arrive
with only the clothing on their

backs; their absorption begins
with the very basics, food and clo-
thing, in absorption centers run
by the Jewish Agency throughout
Israel.
The 10-month absorption pro-
gram — double the length of that
provided Israel's other immig-
rants — includes language in-
struction and basic vocational
training. The many agencies that
receive UJA funds — from Youth
Aliyah residences and ORT voca-
tional training schools to the
many Joint Distribution Commit-
tee programs for the aged and
handicapped — play an important
part in this costly absorption
process.
Although most of the Ethio-
pians lack educational back-
ground, they have a tremendous
will to succeed. Israeli teachers
have devised new methods for
teaching Hebrew, and volunteer
tutors are so plentiful many vol-
unteers have been turned away.
The Ethiopian aliyah is viewed
by Israel as a vital resource. In the
Youth Aliyah villages and ORT
training schools, they are being
trained for future jobs as com-
puter and electronics technicians.
USing the experience of earlier
waves of aliyah — from Yemen,
Iraq and the Soviet Union — the
Jewish Agency involves the el-
ders of the Ethiopian community
in the education of the youth so
they will not lose touch with their
culture.
Naftaly and Frankel cited one
example of their success. In
Kiryat Arba, a 15-year-old Ethio-
pian boy, in Israel for only three
years, recently won the National
Bible Contest.
