serious side to Gould. Mrs.
Rubinoff recalls him as a
"warm, loving boy. He is a
strong family man. His family
is first, last and always."
He's also principled. He
emigrated to Canada during
the Vietnam War, but not as a
draft-dodger. Craine said he
applied for conscientious ob-
jector status "because he be-
lieved in it so strongly." In
1964, he went during the
"freedom summer" to Missis-
sippi to teach black children.
He's also very sure about the
message he wants to convey
about Jewish humor.
"I want people to realize
that Jewish humor is a reflec-
tion of the Jewish soul. We
Jews are defined by the stories
we tell. The Jew has given the
world a gift, and it's the gift of
self-deprecation, the gift of
poking fun at oneself, the gift
of irony. The Jewish experi-
ence is mostly the world ex-
perience."
He added that "America has
a Jewish sense if humor,"
owing to roles Jews have
played in the media, in film,
Broadway and on TV. But he
doesn't like it when Jews por-
tray other Jews in a bad light.
As an example, he cited
Jewish American Princess
(J.A.P.) jokes.
"I don't think Jewish prin-
cess jokes are true. The joke
has nothing to do with Jews,
because traditionally the
vision of Jewish women is vol-
uptuous, erotic, sensual.
Jewish women are seen as the
dark beauty, the sensual
woman. The humor in those
(princess) jokes comes from a
viciousness which does not
have its core in truth."
He called J.A.P. jokes sexist
and vile, and attributed their
authorship to "assimilated
self-hating Jews."
"What makes a joke good is
its truth," he said, explaining
there is little or no truth to
J.A.P. jokes. "If there's any
truth to them at all, so what?
That's no reason to slander an
entire sex — Jewish
womanhood — because of
this."
Gould stands strong for his
principles, but he's not a soap-
box orator. He gets his ego trip
when someone tells him they
have learned something from
a Gould lecture. And that is
how he likes • to be remem-
bered.
"I want to raise conscious-
ness. I want to have an effect
on the world. I want to touch
people. The best way to touch
people is through magazines,
books and lectures." ❑

My heart aches deeply
For this, any beloved country.
Will they steal from us
the last true bastion
Of freedom?
Men of high degree,
Of the sacred cloth,
Now preach hatred
In their church,
One against the other
A Holy Crusade of their
Own, and only way,
To righteousness
To the one and only path
To their God.
Almost every country
In the world
Is stained deeply,
With Jewish blood.
This little sliver of
True democracy - Israel -
Is drenched with the
Blood of their history
Saturating every square
Inch.
Why is the Rose of Sharon
So blood stained?
Why is the pure, white
Lily of the Valley
Tinged all over with red?
Even the flowers of Israel
Cannot breathe and grow
Unmolested in Israel.
Surrounded on all sides,
In depth,
By age-old, sworn
Enemies
With drawn swords,
Openly declaring the
Complete and absolute
Destruction of Israel.
Will the heinous head
Of another Holocaust
Be allowed to flourish
A nd defile
Our land of hard-fought
Freedom.?
Has not the price already
Been paid in full?
There are strong murmurings
In this land
of low-born, bigoted,
Destructive forces, ready
To rise again.
Let us begin anew. to
Rebuild and revitalize
Our beloved Lady With the Lamp
Let us renew our pledge
To give her a full measure
Of freedom and liberty,
Of human understanding
Of freedom for all,
So that her light may shine
Across the, seas
To destroy the
Malignant seeds
Of those oncoming clouds
Of hate
That seek entry into our
Haven of freedom
Let the world know,
Once again,
That our Statue of Liberty's
Quest for eternal freedom
Is alive and well
And cannot be destroyed.
For this, we unite as one.
