Vienna (JTA) — Interior Minis-
ter Karl Blecha proposed
punishment of up to one year in
prison for anyone who per-
petuates or disseminates the "Au-
schwitz lie," the claim that the
Holocaust never occurred.
He said at a press conference
here that the Austrian penal code
must be amended accordingly and
that the same punishment be
applied to anyone who approves,
praises, minimizes or denies the
crimes committed under the Nazi
regime in Austria.
He would also close loopholes in
existing laws which prevent some
Jews from bringing legal action
against anti-Semitic offenders.
Blecha said neo-nazi activists
constitute a very small group in
Austria, numbering no more than
180-200. But he could not esti-
mate the number of sympathizers
or the amount of financial and
logistical support they receive
from abroad. He said the West
German authorities are cooperat-
ing closely with the Austrian
authorities in that area.
Blecha listed some actions his
ministry has taken against neo-
Nazism in Austria in recent
years. He said that since May,
1983 when the present coalition
government replaced former
Chancellor Bruno Kreisky's
socialist regime, four neo-Nazi

organizations have been dis-
solved. Ten neo-Nazi meetings
were banned, 18 non-Austrian
neo-Nazis have been declared
personae non gratae in Austria
and 175 were reported to district
attorneys.

Shultz Adds
Mideast Stops

Washington (JTA) — Secretary
of State George Shultz will go to
Egypt and Jordan after he visits
Israel on May 10, the State De
partment announced last week.
Department spokesman Ber-
nard Kalb stressed that Shultz is
not going to Cairo and Amman as
a result of any "dramatic break-
through" achieved by Richard
Murphy, Assistant Secretary of
State for Near Eastern and south
Asian Affairs, during his April
visit to the Middle East. "Nor has
there been any setback," Kalb
added.
"We are seeking practical steps
that will lead to direct negotia-
tions between Israel and its Arab
neighbors and ultimately result
in a just and lasting peace for the
region. We expect this to be a
slow, gradually developing proc-
ess," Kalb said.

Open Letter to the President

Mr. Reagan,
I have been a citizen of this country for all my
sixty years, I am no longer proud. You have con-
vinced me that this country is a land governed by
the egos of our "Leaders, " men corrupted by
power.
It shames me that one small man can make an
arbitrary decision as to whether or not people, work-
ing productive citizens who through no fault of their
own find themselves unemployed, have their sup-
plemental compensation discontinued at the whim
of a single individual who equates altruism with
pornography.
Mr. Reagan I have absolutely no respect for you
as a man, or your office, oppression is relative.
