Sylvia Barr

The mother and daughter,
two-piano team of Sylvia Barr
and Rochelle Barr will present a

program
music
classical
entitled, "Four Hands in Two
Piano Time," at the League of
Jewish Women's Organizations
of Greater Detroit installation
meeting at 12:15 p.m. May 9 at
Temple Israel.
At 15, the former Sylvia Stone
was a graduate concert piano
student, studying under the late
Dr. Alle D. Zuidema. At Cass
Technical High School music
department, she also was an ac-
complished harp student. She
was chosen to represent Detroit
and played the piano with the
National High School Orchestra,
in Dallas, Tex., under the direc-
tion of Joseph E. Maddy, the
founder of Interlochen.
During the Depression, she
was forced to give up her con-
cert aspirations and become a
piano teacher. More recently,
she has taught the piano only to
her own grandchildren. She is a
teacher of the Hebrew language
and has, also, prepared hun-
dreds of young men and women
for bar and bat mitzvah.
Rochelle Barr began her piano
studies with Dr. Zuidema and
then continued with the late Mr.
Edward Bredshall. She was the
May Festival soloist with her
high school orchestra. Later,
while touring the Scandinavian

countries, she played composer
Edvard Grieg's own piano at his
home in Troldhaugen, Norway.
She plays the organ and is the
assistant organist at Temple
Beth El.
Freda Mendelson will narrate
the program.
Dessert and coffee will be
served. There is a nominal
charge. The community is wel-
