... Mirrors are all along top of
counter on full walls in rear and
above front windows ... A
couple of counter cases are
beautifully styled with oval-
scalloped gray wood framing.
This wasn't just a new paint
job ... the entire place was gut-
ted ... New booths with black
leather seats and back against
gray wood, new carpeting, new
ceiling, new ceramic tile by
counter and waiting area .. .
Even waitress uniforms have
been changed ... and the dis-
hes, too ... Only thing that re-
mained was cooking area.
Break Basket menu remains
the same ... no change in items
or prices ... and the waitresses,
many who have been there since
the Nosherie days, all smile
even more in the new, gracious
surroundings.
POSSIBILITY LOOMS large
that original director, Ran Avni,
and several of the original cast
will appear at Birmingham
Theater's presentation of Kuni
Leml . . . May30 through June
30 ... starring Shelly Berman
... Musical based on Avrom
Goldfadn's classic The Fanatic
or the Two Kuni Lemis (1880),
was a perennial hit in the Yid-
dish theater.
DENNIS HERZINA is new
executive chef at Sheraton Oaks
in Novi ... He was an appren-
tice at 1980 Culinary Art Salon,
and awarded two gold medals of
excellence and an "Augie" for a
perfect platter ... Same year,
Dennis was one of six appren-
tices selected to assist United
States Culinary Olympic Team
in Frankfurt, West Germany . .
Year before he had been named
"Apprentice of The Year" by
Michigan Chefs de Cuisine.
SHE'S NOT ONLY A cham-
pion dancer ... but what a cook!
... Ask folks up at The Jewish
News who made short work of
the delicious cabbage borscht
brought by Dee Shapiro.
Here's Dee's recipe for 12
servings ... 3 lbs. short ribs
(12), 2 lbs. beef soup bones (10)
. Cover with water ... Add 1/2
tsp. No-Salt ... Let come to boil,
skim until clear on medium
heat ... Then add one large
white onion, two cabbages,
medium-size box of seedless
raisins, Sweet and Low to taste,
sour sit to taste, two large cans
of whole tomatoes, 18 oz. can of
Arturo Sauce (with finely chop-
ped green peppers and mush-
rooms) ... If can't get Arturo
Sauce (it's at Shopping Center
Mkt.) use small can of stewed
tomatoes ... Cook a few hours
on low heat ... Then put in
small can of tomato puree for
thickening. a.

ice cream for all five at our
table ... He is so deft in his
ability ... so precise ... and the
result was a superb offering of
strawberries flambe.
Presently, The Drake is only
open for dinner . . . Monday-
Thursday, 6 p.m to 10 p.m., Fri-
day and Saturday, 6 p.m. to 11
p.m.
The Drake Restaurant has ar-
rived ... and emerging victori-
ous.
