Reagan's Trip

I am a Nazi Holocaust survivor.
, ' - My family, parents, sister,
grandparents, uncles and aunts,
and cousins, consisting of over 70
persons were brutally murdered
i .15y the notorious S.S. Nazis. Some
were mere children.
It is my understanding that
President Reagan is planning to
-'isit their cemetery, thus honor-
ing the executioners of my family.
Isn't that inconsistent with the
ledge Mr. Reagan made to us just
three short years ago? At the
gathering of the Holocaust sur-
vivors in Washington, D.C., Mr.
Reagan personally said how
grateful America was to us for
„choosing this country to begin a
new life. I will never forget the
,Ithunderous applause and stand-
ing ovation Mr. Reagan received
for that statement.
Now Mr. Reagan is about to
visit the cemetery of my family's
murderers, thus legitimizing
their heinous crimes. I cannot be-
lieve it. My murdered family in
-Auschwitz and Treblinka have no
cemetery. In fact they have no
graves. By visiting the S.S. Nazi
cemetery in Germany Mr. Reagan
will be desecrating their blessed
memory.
> Mr. President I implore you, for
'\ the sake of the memory of the six
,-,,., million that perished, please do
not visit that German cemetery.

`Holocaustism 9

Finally,
Congratulations!
of
t h e
w i courageous
someone
p n0ugh t has with
issue
to deal
American Jewry's obsession with
the Holocaust (Jewish News,
April 12).
Let the truth be stated bluntly
and succinctly. American Jewry

has made a religion out of the
Holocaust. It is an item which is
neither controversial nor one
which makes demands upon its
adherents. Thus, those who are
not inclined to take their
"Judaism" seriously now man-
ifest their Jewish identity
through "Holocaustism." Neither
is it irrelevant that some have
made a living and career out of
our great national tragedy.
Our tradition teaches us that
the Temple and even the land of
Israel itself could be lost to the
Jewish people but that we would
thrive as long as we studied Torah
and lived its precepts. The mes-
sage is,simple and clear. Ours is
not a faith enslaved to the physi-
cal i.e. read, monuments (whether
in Washington, D.C., Detroit or
elsewhere).
So, let those who truly wish to
commemorate the loss of our
brethren do so in the most Jewish
way of all; to wit, by rededicating
themselves to the study and prac-
tice of our ancient and glorious
tradition!

Perhaps some of the other
members of the community will
now realize that we do not have

nor do we have fire coming from
our mouths, and instead of saying
to us, "Oh, you people don't be-

Seminary Sabbath Marked

The annual Jewish Theological
Seminary of America Sabbath
will take place on Saturday, ac-
cording to Harold Berry, general
chairman of the seminary's cam-
paign efforts in the Greater De-
troit area.
Berry explained that the Semi-
nary Sabbath is held each year in
advance of the Detroit city-wide
dinner, which takes place this
year June 13 at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek. The dinner benefits the
Jewish Theological Seminary in
New York, the center of Conser-
vative Judaism in the United
States and Canada.
In honor of Seminary Sabbath,
t Conservative rabbis will direct
their weekly sermons towards re-
lating to their congregations the
seminary's involvement in the
Jewish community and explain-
ing the various programs con-
ducted at the New York campus
and at campuses in Los Angeles
,_. and in Israel.
Berry said that selected mem-
bers of Conservative synagogues
will be recognized for special serv-

of honor for their work on behalf of
the Conservative movement. To
date, honorees include Joseph H.
and Lawrence S. Jackier of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, William Feldman
of Cong. B'nai Moshe and Philip
Langwald of Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
In addition, aliyot will be given
to seminary supporters at Sab-
bath services in Conservative
synagogues throughout the De-
troit metropolitan area.
In its 99th year, the seminary is
the training ground for the
movement's religious leaders and
educators. The seminary offers
degree courses to laymen in
Jewish studies and sponsors a
wide range of educational, cul-
tural and inter-faith activities in-
cluding the new Boesky Family
Library, the Jewish Museum, the
Eternal Light broadcasts and the
Ramah Camps in the United
States, Canada and Israel. The
seminary also maintains a cam-
pus in Los Angeles and in
Jerusalem.
