Thousands of Jewish Holocaust
survivors and their fan:Lilies
attended an ."eVening ot com
memoration" through the per , . .
forming arts at the Philadelphia
Civic Center. Sunday.
Elie Wiese', chairman of the
United States HolocaUst Memo-
rial Council, told the survivors
that "If our testimony had been
accepted as witnesses, what . hap-
pened last week would not have
happened," an apparent reference
to the controversy over President
Reagan's planned visit to the Bit-
burg military cemetery in West
Germany.
"This is the beginning, if it is
perniitted to continue, of the re-
habilitation of the SS," Wiesel de 7
Glared. "I know nobody here wants
it and nobody in this country
wants it. We must warn others."
The commemorative evening,
sponsored by the Memorial Coun-
cil, concluded the first day's
events of the three-day Inaugural
Assembly of the American
Gathering of Jewish Holocaust
Survivors.
