New York (JTA) — The New
York City Holocaust Memorial
Council's executive committee
last week gave tentative approval
to Governor Mario Cuomo's pro-
posal to put a museum and memo-
rial to the Holocaust victims in a
new apartment building at Bat-
tery Park City.
David Blumenfeld, executive
director of the Holocaust Com-
mission, expressed enthusiasm
over the governor's proposals, and
noted that there are considerable
advantages in having the
museum and memorial in Battery
Park City rather than at the U.S.
Custom House in Lower Manhat-
tan, as had originally been pro-
posed.
Blumenfeld said the immediate
advantages of the governor's pro-
posal would be a savings of the
expenses that would have been
involved in renovating of the Cus-
toms House. He estimated that
cost at around $5 million.
Last October, the commission
was granted use of space in the
77-year-old Beaux-Arts land-
mark building from the General
Services Administration. But it
was suggested that the Customs
House was too lavish, too ornate
for a museum and memorial to the
six million Jews who died in the
Holocaust. This was acknowl-
edged by the governor in his an-
nouncement of the proposal.
Gov. Cuomo proposed that the
34-story Battery Park building —
which has always been part of the
planned complex — would be but
up by a non-profit corporation,
with funds generated from rentals
used to underwrite the museum's
operating costs.

Romanian Sees
Mideast Peace

Ottawa (JTA) — President
Nicolae Ceausescu of Romania is
convinced that the Middle East
"now faces an important moment
in the search for peace." He holds
that view as a result of his recent
meetings with various Arab lead-
ers and with Israeli Premier Shi-
mon Peres, according to Rala tbi Ar-
thur Schneier, president of the
Appeal of Conscience Foundation
of New York, who had a 40-
minute private meeting with the
visiting Romanian leader at the
governor general's residence in
Ottawa.
Schneier, who is spiritual
leader of the Park East
Synagogue in New York, said that
Ceausescu believes that Middle
East peace eventually will have to
come about through an interna-
tional conference and that the
Soviet Union cannot be excluded
from the process. Romania is the
only Communist bloc country that
maintains diplomatic relations
with Israel.
Ceausescu is on a state visit to
Canada. Schneier said their meet-
ing was the latest in a series of
periodic meetings he has had with
the Romanian president to ex-
change views on the international
situation. Schneier also met with
the Romanian Foreign Minister,
Stefan Andrei.
He said that at the moment,

THE WRITE WORD

If you find the right gift a chore,
And written words don't flow for you,
Let the "write words" from my pen pour,
'lb make a portrait fresh and new.
A character sketch I will create.
'lb mark whatever you celebrate.
So let my "Write Words" speak for you,
And convey portraits, Oh so true!
