Arlington, Va. (JTA) — Abba
Eban, chairman of the Knesset's
Foreign Affairs and Defense
Committee, rejected Monday
whati`e said was the view of some
Ameiiiaan economists that Israel
is not doing enough to cut the size
of its government in the effort to
reduce inflation and its deficit
economy.
Speaking at the 26th annual
policy conference of the American
Israel Public Affairs Committee
(AIPAC) at the Hyatt Regency
Crystal City Hotel near Washing-
ton, Eban said the government
and Knesset have displayed
"courage" in cutting defense
appropriations despite the con-
tinuing threats that Israel faces.
But Eban stressed that while
Israel is taking "painful" steps to
cut spending by consumers and
government, "we cannot do this
alone" but require the U.S. to pro-
vide even more aid "than the
generous" funds it does now.
"If Israel is economically weak,
it cannot be military strong," he
declared. "If Israel is military
weak, we cannot defend ourselves
against pressures and influences
which may be brought to bear
upon our most vital interests."
At the same time, Eban
stressed that "Israel's economy is
a success story" not a failure. He

ferred to a new camp at an undis-
closed location.
Iosif Begun, a long-terni re-
fusenik and leading MoscoW He- c,
brew teacher, is serving an un- j
precedented third term in the-1,
Soviet Union. He was sentenced
in 1983 to a 17-year term for al-
leged "anti-Soviet agitation and
propaganda." His wife Inna ended
a hunger strike two weeks ago on
her doctor's advice. At that ;time, c):
more than 80 Jewish activists ,_
from Moscow, Leningrad anei
Riga joined Boris in his prcitest.

noted that when AIPAC:. was
founded, Israel was earning $70
million from exports while today
the figure is $12-$13 billion.
Meanwhile, in Jeruspem,
Premier Shimon Peres attempted
Friday to calm down economic un-
rest, and assured the public that
the government did not intend to
introduce any changes in the
terms of present savings pro-
grams.
Peres promised that govern- c;
ment would not harm in anyway
whatsoever the financial assets of
the public.
Peres made the statement fol-
lowing recent statements by fi-
nance Minister Yitzhak Modai --
that the government planned to
limit the liquidity of public say-
ings. Even though Modai stressed
that in any event, such plans
would refer only to future savings,
and not to the existing ones, the
statement increased public con-
cern that the government did plan'',
to lay its hands on the popular
dollar-linked savings, known as
the patam. This concern was in- j
creased, following the publication
of a ten-point document, prepared
by the economic advisors of U.S.
Secretary of State George Shultz, )
which specifically stated that
some reform in the Patam pro-
gram was necessary.

New York (JTA) — In response
to appeals from the Chief Rabbis
of Israel, Boris Begun, son of
Soviet Prisoner of Conscience
Iosif Begun, has ended a 45-day
hunger strike in the USSR. The
19-year-old Begun fasted to pro-
test increasing measures to iso-
late his father from his family,
and the failure of Soviet officials
to answer concerns about Iosif's
health.
In violation of Soviet law, Be-
gun's family has repeatedly been
denied the right to visit him at the
prison camp, with officials declar-
ing no meeting will be allowed be-
fore late 1985. In addition, no mail
has been received from Iosif in
over six months, and parcels sent
to him have been intercepted.
Last week, after being notified
that two packages were received
at the camp, Boris learned his
