NY Parade ,draws 50,000 r New York (JTA) — Under bril- tiant spring skies, an estimated half-million spectators watched d more than 50,000 people arched in the 21st annual Sa- te to Israel Parade Sunday, arking the 37th anniversary of ?..le independence of the Jewish .tate. The parade, organized and ponsored by the American onist Youth Foundation (AZYF), began at noon. From hen until after 4 p.m. scores of ouths, men and women of all es and all walks of life, trooped along sunny Fifth Avenue from 59th to 86th streets. The songs they sang and the multi-colored anners they carried emphasized this year's parade theme: "Buil- • er's of Zion, Builders of Israel." The reviewing stand, set up at 9th Street, near the southeast ntrance to Central Park, was packed with city, state and na- tional dignitaries, Israel's rank- ng diplomats and a visiting Cabinet Minister from Jerusalem. Speaking for the Administra- tion, Secretary of Interior Donald Hodel expressed America's deep commitment to Israel's security 2nd well being. One passenger was killed and several were wounded. Ben-Shimol was also convicted 'of attempted murder for a grenade attack on an Arab coffee shop in the Old City. No one was hurt in that attack which occurred sev- eral months before he fired the missile at the bus. The defendant, who arrived at the court in leg shackles for sen- tencing, was applauded by a crowd gathered outside. His de- mand that he be imprisoned with --20 alleged members of the Jewish "--terrorist underground charged with crimes of violence against Arab civilians over a four-year period dating back to 1980, was (-- rejected by the court. Ben-Shimol claimed that he was motivated in his attack on the --) bus by the same ideology as that of the alleged terrorists, all of them militant Orthodox Jews from the West Bank.
