Bomb Hoax Downtown Staff Report The Detroit Police Department has received no leads or clues into who left a fake bomb on the steps of the Butzel Building in downtown Detroit last Friday morning. The building houses the Jewish Welfare Federation, Jewish Community Council, Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith and other Jewish offices. A building janitor discovered the fake bomb at 9:50 a.m. Several cardboard tubes had been painted, wired together, attached to a broken clock and placed in an open attache case. The janitor widened the opening with a broom stick before calling police. Police spokesman Sgt. Daniel W. Carr told The Jewish News that the bomb was a "complete fake." There was no note in the attache case and neither the police nor Jewish agencies have received any telephone calls about the incident. Alvin Kushner, executive di- rector of the Jewish Community Council, theorizes that a pranks- ter wanted to see the building evacuated but did not know that it would be closed last Friday for the concluding days of Passover. "I'm guessing, and this is strictly speculation," Kushner said, "but some idiot probably tried to call us to evacuate after placing the case on the steps and got our tape- recorded message that the build- ing was closed. I'm sure it was just a cheap hoax."
