Shaarey Zedek. Anna, unable to celebrate this occasion herself, is the daughter of one of the Soviet Union's lead- ing mathematical specialists. Shari has been corresponding with Anna for over a yearand has spoken to the family by telephone on several occasions. Shari has participated in local activities on behalf of Soviet Jews. The Ioffe family applied to emi- grate in 1976 but were refused be- cause of the stature of the family. Prior to application, Prof. Ale=- xander Ioffe was an associate pro- fessor. He now works at Moscow Institute for Speedway and Aerodrome Construction. Ale- xander's wife Rosa is a physicist, an active member of the new Women's Liberation Group in Moscow. She had taken part in all the women's demonstrations which occurred in 1978. Several universities in the U.S., France, and Israel have invited Ioffe to be professor in matahema- tics. In October 1981, he was placed under house arrest for a few days and in November of that year Mrs. Ioffe was called in by the KGB and told to stop her nationalist activities.
