The Holiness Code starts here. .91 1 mum= Gam A New Way to Dress... 8:00 P.M. For Information ceiying of the Torah at Mount Sinai, Jews labored to maintain this distinctive difference. It al- ways represented the first step in sanctification of the peoplehood of Israel. The first waves of immigration to these shores brought a change in attitude in observant behavior. The expressed purpose was not to be recognized as a Jew. Break down all barriers and be lost in .a melting pot was the initial goal and purpose. "Let us be like all the nations" was the motto and the price we paid in numbers matches the physical Holocaust of our people this century. To parap- hrase the Passover query, How is this people different from all other people? The answer — all nations may eat anything, Jews have a , selective diet. Discarding this dif- ference forces a wedge that leads to assimilation and loss of iden- tity. That is the great and striking contribution which Judaism has made to the concept of worship and service of God. God is served not only in formal acts of worship in a synagogue, but in every sim- ple action of the common day. And God is served not only with the spiritual side of man's being, but even with that part of him which is regarded as belonging to the animal side of his nature. It is that grand concept which underlies what are commonly called the dietary laws. For Judaism prescribes not only how man shall eat, but what man shall eat, and in what he eats, in his adherence to these laws, he serves God while engaged in the act of physical satisfaction. We have heard from time to time the sneer- ing remark that Judaism with its insistence on rigid adherence to these laws is a "religion of the kitchen." The answer is obvious. On the contrary, Judaism is the only religion which invades even the kitchen, and which says "Even here you can serve God, even here you can act according to His will." There is a story of a sage of un- usual virtue and holiness who asked for the privilege of visiting paradise. His wish was granted, and he was trasported to paradise, where he saw sages of previous generations studying the Torah. "But they did the same thing on earth," he exclaimed. A heavenly voice answered, "The sages are not in paradise, paradise is in the sages." This is not limited to sainted scholars. There is a paradise within every child of God. We gain inner paradise through the divine soul that enables us to search for truth, to establish justice, perform good deeds, and attain holiness. The character and self discipline prerequisite to holiness begins with the introduction of the diet- ary laws.
