judgement of those in charge
that the problem had been
dealt with in a satisfactory
manner."
Dr. Bauder claims that dis-
missal of the three teachers at
that time was impossible be-
cause Cranbrook officials did
not know who was involved in
the incident. "I don't believe
that they had undertaken an
investigation that would have
given them that information,"
the director said. In defense of
Martin, Dr. Bauder said she
felt it would have been unwise
for him to take severe discipli-
nary actions without first or-
dering a thorough investiga-
tion such as the one just con-
cluded.
The Cranbrook director
feels certain that with the re-
vised admissions procedures
at Brookside, a recurrence of
the bagel incident would be
highly unlikely, if not al-
together impossible. "Since
1982," she said, "teachers,
though not entirely removed
from the process, are involved
in a much less direct way. The
only teachers currently taking
part in the decision to admit
students are those who might
be involved in a specialized
function such as reading
enrichment, making them
qualified to assess the abilities
of an applicant in a specific
area."
A check of several other
"prestige" private schools in
the Detroit area revealed ad-
missions practices that were
more in keeping with the re-
vised procedures now in place
at Brookside. Teachers at
Roeper City and Country
School in Bloomfield Hills do
interview applicants, accord-
ing to Gerry Barens, assistant
to the head of admissions. "But
these teachers do not take part
in the acceptance or denial of a
candidate," she said.
"We have some teachers
who interview potential can-
didates and overall decisions
are made by a committee on
which a number of teachers
sit," Ethel Burwell, director of
admissions at University
Liggett School in Grosse
Pointe Woods, told The Jewish
News. But Burwell is quick to
point out that the adminis-
trators who sit on the commit-
tee have the final say regard-
ing admissions. At Detroit
Country Day in Birmingham,
a school official said that cases
where potential applicants
feel that they have been dis-
criminated against for per-
sonal reasons were rare, even
though many on the school's
