it already." But you have to
love us to be so indulgent.
One day at work, my hus-
band was asked to join senior
staffers in the editor's office
where they were to be ad-
dressed by an expert on the
economy. It was only when the
expert began talking that my
spouse realized that he was
trapped for two uncom-
prehending hours of animated
discussion — in Hebrew. Not
wishing to offend the guest, he
assumed a listening expres-
sion and smiled and nodded
along with everyone else.
Afterwards, the editor com-
plimented him on his "obvious
grasp of Hebrew." He accepted
the praise modestly. "How
could I tell him that all I un-
derstood was 'Madison Ave-
nue' and `inflatzia.?' "
We, for whom language is
both bread and butter, and one
of life's great pleasures, are
suddenly functional illiter-
ates. When the bills come in —
in angular Hebrew and curly
Arabic .— we are at sea. The
green ones, we know, are for
electricity, the blue are gas,
the white are city rates and so
on. But to what-do those mul-
tiplicity of numbers refer? We
generally assume that the
largest number is the one we
owe. And in this crazy world of
hyper -inflatzia , we are usually
correct.
Recently, I won a small vic-
tory in the supermarket be-
cause of my inability to com-
municate, let alone dish out
chutzpah.
I was hand-picking straw-
berries — as is the custom —
when the man in charge of the
fruit and vegetable counter
chose to take offense. He yel-
led at me, grabbed my bag of
fruit, and emptied it back into
the pile, indicating valuably
that I was not to pick out the
good strawberries, but should
leave him to serve me the
good, bad and indifferent.
If I'd been able, I would have
become embroiled in the sort
of shouting match Israelis re-
lish. Bereft of words, I had to
resort to action, I dumped onto
his scales all the bags of,fruit
and vegetables I had gathered,
and I followed them with ev-
erything else in my laden
trolly — dairy products, flour,
sugar, meat, cleaning mate-
rials, the lot.
"There you are," I said in
English. "If I can't have the
strawberries I want, I don't
want anything else."
I stalked out, to the admir-
ing applause of my fellow-
shoppers, leaving him gaping
speechless at the pile of goods
before him.
