nians that everybody can see
that they kill the Turks be-
cause of something that hap-
pened by now nearly a century
ago (the massacres began in
earnest in 1915). The Arme-
nians are prominent citizens
of the United States, England
and France. Do they want to
give this up to go back and
tend sheep? This is just hatred
that is kept going, which is
easy to do whenever there are
insane people around who can
find new excuses to justify it.
"I don't think you can turn
back the hands of history;
most Jews existing today are
descendants of Romans who
converted. I think that the
religious attachment that I
recognize to Jerusalem and to
the Land of the Bible is a
strong one, if what they want
is religious enclaves."
Then does Bettelheim see
any hope for peaceful coexis-
tence between Arab and Jew
in Israel? "I wish for it," he
replies, then pauses, "But
hope is too strong a term. As

much as I wish for it, I don't see
it."

the topic focused upon child
abuse. The assembled press
sought the opinion of the man
considered by his peers to be
the greatest living child psy-
chologist. Bettelheim was still
in top form as he replied to a
question, "In general I think
that the law is a very poor tool
to take care of private be-
havior, whether it's drugs or
sex or child abuse." In a small
rural community like Mt.
Pleasant, that response was
certain to open a Pandora's
Box. It did. And Bettelheim
clearly enjoyed every minute
of the controversy.
By the time the press con-
ference ended, Bettelheim was
sounding like a political can-
didate. He lambasted the
criminal justice system, stat-
ing, "Our law (system) is more
concerned with the niceties of
the law, whether a warrant
was legally served and not
