and only through the inter-
vention of two distinguished
Gentiles, Dr. Gordon Allport
and journalist Dwight Mac-
Donald.
From 1939 to 1942 "people
didn't want to know," recalls
Bettelheim. "When I came
over, I was, of course, full of my
own experiences — the dan-
gers of the Nazis and the na-
ture of the camps. And I was
told in no uncertain terms to
keep my mouth shut if I
wanted to find a job here —
which I badly needed. I was .
told that my stories were
paranoiac distortions based
upon my hatred of the Nazis
because no German would do
such things .. .
"Isolationism," continues
Bettelheim, "was pretty
strong at that time, and I was
accused of trying to do my best
to get the United States into
the anti-Nazi camp. And so I
was even threatened!
"Of the two psychoanalytic
journals to which I submitted
my paper, one said they would
not print distortions, and the
other said I should have kept
careful notes in the camps to
support what I was saying.
Why hadn't I kept a diary?'
they demanded, which bet-

the concentration camps. My
article was only printed by
Allport beause he too had a
thought that, yes, the Ger-
mans could do such a thing."
Did Bettelheim speak before
Jewish groups alerting them
to the dangerous situation fac-

telheim remains placid as he
explains that "the Jews in par-
ticular were anxious not to ap-
pear biased. At that time, the
American Jewish Committee
felt such actions could only in-
crease persecution of the Jews
in Germany and they wanted
to protect them. It was still
possible to think that way at
that time, but later it became
more and more certain that
the Jews were in grave
danger. Pearl Harbor virtu-
ally changed things overnight.
Only then was there some
interest in what I was saying,
and only then could I get my
paper published. But without
Pearl Harbor, I don't think it
could have been printed."
Did Bettelheim know that
eventually the destruction
process would begin? "Hitler
actually had stated this policy
in Mein Kampf," he replies,
"repeatedly saying that after
the war there would be no
