Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Tel Aviv
municipality has declared this
year "Rambam Year," to mark the
850th birthday of the philosopher
Maimonides, known as the Ram-
barn.
The city will introduce special
lessons in local schools devoted to
the personality of the scholar who
greatly influenced Jewish
thought. His 'birthday fell on
April 5 and about 10,000 people
participated in special festivities
last week in Tiberias, near
Maimonides' grave.

are as eligible as and member
of the House of Israel to a share
in the hereafter (Tosef., Sanh.
13:2). This dictum is twice
codified by Maimonides (Yad,
Teshuvah 3:5), who also de-
fines the concept (Yad,
Melakhim 8:11): "All who ob-
serve the Seven Command-
ments" — obligatory to the de-
scendents of Noah — are
hasidei ummot ha-olam, pro-
vided that they are motivated
by belief in the divine origin
and the authenticity of Moses'
prophecy, and not by mere in-
tellectual cogency. In the latter
case they are to be considered
only as "wise ones of the other
nations" (hakhmeihem, accord-
ing to some versions). Without
specifically naming the right-
eous gentiles, Maimonides also
equates "all human beings
who ardently seek God ... de-
sire to worship Him, to know
Him, and to walk uprightly in
His ways ..." with priests and
levites (Yad, Shemittah 13:13).
The concept of hasidei ummot
ha-olam was elaborated and
embellished in medieval
Jewish literature. The concept
is mentioned in a legal centext
in the Shulhan Arukh. The
Zohar states that all gentiles
who do not hate Israel, and
who deal justly with the Jews,
qualify as hasidei ummot ha-
olam (Exodus, 268a).
Since World War II the term
has been used for those non-Jews
who helped Jews to escape the
Nazi persecutions.
Let it be noted from this deeply
moving explanation that these
righteous are not only the hasidei
ummot, the saintly: they are also
the hakhme ha-olam, the cultur-
ally manifested personalities.
They are also the learned.
It is in this spirit that Dr. Littell
is honored. It is as the righteous
man who also is the wise scholar.
Such has been his dedication to
justice — with a sense of honor
and with the spirit of a highly cul-
tural Christian leader that he is
introduced to Jewry as the Right-
eous Gentile.
It should be noted that Mrs. Lit-
tell has shared her husband's
glorious deeds and merits recog-
nition in the honor to be accorded
him — an honor well deserved, a
man appropriately selected for
the current Holocaust Academy
ceremonies by Dr. John Mames,
acting in behalf of Shaarit Hap-
laytah.

EQUIPMENT
The equipment problem is worsening as equipment be-
comes older and budgets are reduced. The dangers con-
fronting experimental science are very severe. The spe-
cial fund for the purchase of equipment is not sufficient to
meet all of Technion's needs .. .
