Shalom Sisterhood's annual
Donor Day on May 14 at the
synagogue, beginning at 10 a.m.
The author of Jewish and
Female, Schneider and a small
group of other Jewish women
editors and writers in 1976
created Lilith, the groundbreak-

Born in Winnipeg, Canada, in
1944, Schneider was raised in a
Conservative Jewish household.
Her father's family has been in
Winnipeg for more than -100
years. Her mother, whose family
was also among Canada's
pioneers, acted in Yiddish theater
in Winnipeg, and had her own
Jewish radio program there in the
1940s and 1950s.
She left Winnipeg to attend
Brandeis University, from which
she was graduated with honors in
English and American literature.
She also holds. a master's degree
in English. As a book editor, free-
lance journalist and critic, she has
lived and worked in several cities
in the U.S. and Canada (including
a year spent on an Indian reserva-

Jerusalem. She has been based in
New York for the past 12 years,
where she lives with her husband
and three children.
Schneider lectures across the
country on issues of concern to
Jewish women and men, and con-
tributes to several Jewish period-
icals. She is an appointee to the
New York Federation of Jewish
Philanthropies Task Force on the
Role of the Jewish Woman in a
Changing Society, acts as a con-
sultant on eliminating sexism
from Jewish texts and children's
books, and is a founding board
member of US-Israel Women-
to-Women, a foundation set up to
fund feminist projects in Israel.
This past summer she was a
participant in the annual Ameri-
can Jewish Congress Dialogue in
Jerusalem, which this year fo-
cused on "Women as Jew, Jew as
Woman: An Urgent Inquiry."
The donor will begin with
boutiques, followed by lunch and
lecture.
Babysitting will be available.
