String Quartet At Birmingham Temple

The New World String Quartet
will be featured in "Dessert with
Debussy," a cabaret-style concert
on April 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the
Birmingham Temple.
The Quartet will perform works
of Mozart, Debussy and Beeth-
oven in a candlelight cabaret with
French pastries and gourmet cof-
fee available for purchase before
the concert and during intermis-
sion. There is an admission fee.
Doors open at 6:45 p.m.

Founded eight years ago, the
New World String Quartet won
the prestigious Naumberg
Chamber Music Competition in
1979. The four performers, Curtis
Macomber and Vahn Armstrong,
violin; Robert Dan, viola; and
Ross Harbaugh, cello, received
their training at the Juilliard
School and from such artists as
Dorothy DeLay, Nathan Milstein,
and Robert Mann.
The group has toured exten-
sively, playing at festivals such as
Ravinia and Interlochen, as well
as Alice Tully Hall in New York
and the Library of Congress. The
quartet is the quartet-in-
residence at Wayne State Univer-
sity this year.

AKIM Benefit
Scheduled Monday

For Those I Loved, a film detail-
ing Holocaust survivor Martin
Gray's tragedies and triumphs
over them, will be shown at a
benefit for AKIM — The Israel
Association for the Rehabilitation
of the Mentally Handicapped at 8
p.m. Monday at the Maple 3 Thea-
ter.
Sponsored by the Detroit af-
filiate of Friends of AKIM USA,
Inc., the evening is aimed at rais-
ing $50,000 for the association,
according to Paul Zuckerman,
chairman of the U.S. board of di-
rectors.
No solicitations will be made at
the benefit. For tickets, call Linda

The Scoliosis Association of
Michigan will hold a general
meeting 7:30 p.m. Thursday in
the eighth floor lecture hall of the
Providence Medical Building,
Southfield.
