The various derogatory ti `stereotyping of a Jewish mother is o ill served by a Jewish publication. Others contribute to the stereotype and myths pertaining to Jews — we need not do it our- selves. While the overbearing, martyr mother occurs in every culture, this undesirable image does not typify any particular cul- ture. This article is offensive to all of us. It does not represent any- thing of value and is too trite and belittling to be funny. Your newspaper has a respon- sibility to continue the journalis- tic good sense of the past. This ar- ticle and the article on "shiksas" in a previous issue do a disservice to the reputation established by The Jewish News in previous years. Dr. Gershon Weiner I had an interesting telephone conversation with my son David. He is 22, married and living in the Southwest. David is very aware of his heritage, of his roots, even though he grew up in a small, lake community south of Howell. David has served with the United States Navy for four years and has seen, literally, the world from above and below. So, why was I troubled by his conversation? David is now tuned into hate. While we all concern ourselves with what is going on politically in Israel, Nazi sur- vivalist groups, small but deadly, are beginning to flourish in the Southwest. They are having encounters with the law which are bringing them notoriety. L 357-5166 * 851-2765 * . * **************** FRUIT & GIFT BASKETS For all occasions Nation-Wide Delivery RODNICK BROS. Fomenting Hate We have to educate our chil- dren, our next generation, that while former Nazis are still being sought, new extremist groups are forming and they do have money backing them. How else would they survive? Where would they get the unnecessary funding for such a venture? Who are the un- seen financiers of hate? This is not television script writing nor is it fiction. This is reality. While it is our responkbility to work for Israel, we must protect ourselves here as well. We must not think that this great land of ours is going to be able to com- pletely protect all of its people .. . Flora L.
