Harry Farbman

Harry Farbman, a former De-
troiter who had a long career as a
violinist and conductor, died April
4 in Los Angeles, Calif. He was 80.
Mr. Farbman began his musical
career as a child prodigy violin
soloist with the Detroit Sym-
phony Orchestra, under the baton
of Ossip Gabrilowitsch. After
studying in New York with Prof.
Leopold Auer, Mr. Farbman per-
formed in Europe, South America
and the U.S.
For two decades he was assis-
tant conductor and concertmaster
of the St. Louis Symphony, and
held a professorship at Indiana
University and the post of conduc-
tor with the Springfield (Ill.)
Symphony and the Redlands
(California) Bowl.
He is survived by his wife,
Edith; a daughter, Mrs. Eric (Pat-
rice) Wahlstrom; three sisters,
Mrs. Meyer (Ann) Elman, Mrs.
Louis (Nettie) Goodman and Mrs.
William (Frieda) Avrunin, all of
Southfield; and one grandson.

Joe Sinai, retired owner of Joe
Sinai Waste and Oil Co., died
April 9 at age 82.
Born in Russia, Mr. Sinai lived
64 years in the U.S. He was a
member of Pisgah Lodge of B'nai
B'rith and Cong. Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses. He retired in 1970.
He is survived by his wife, Be-
tty; a son, Dr. Allen of Lexington,
Mass.; a daughter, Sandra; a
brother, Cy; a sister, Mrs. Rose
Alpert; and two grandchildren.

New York — Alan M. Stroock,
New York lawyer and Jewish
communal leader, died March 29
at age 77.
Mr. Stroock was a founder of
Commentary magazine and
former chairman of the board and
president of the corporation. of the
Jewish Theological Seminary. He
also was an officer of the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee.

Frances Cousens

Frances R. Cousens, an in-
structor in sociology at the Uni-
versity of Michigan-Dearborn,
died April 6 at age 72.
Born in Poland, Mrs. Cousens
came to the U.S. as a youngster
and was graduated from the
now-defunct Commerce High
School.
She earned degrees at Wayne
State University. Mrs. Cousens
was the first research director of
the Michigan Fair Employment
Practices Commission, predeces-
sor agency of the state depart-
ment of civil rights.
Mrs. Cousens taught at WSU.
She was a member of a Ford
Foundation poverty research
team. She was the author of a
book, Promise Us Performance.
She leaves a son, Mark; two
daughters, Patricia Becker and
Marsha Meckler; and five
grandchildren.
