In an Easter message delivered to more than 200,000 persons gathered in St. Peter's Square, the Pope invoked the 40th anniver- sary of the conclUsion of World War II. He praised "the men and women in each country who of- fered their lives in sacrifice for the right cause, the cause of the dig- nity of the human person." "They faced death as defense- less victims, offered in holocaust, or defending with their arms the free way to life," the Pope said. "They fought not to answer vio- lence with violence or hatred wth hatred but to affirm a right and a freedom for themselves and others, also for the children of those who were then the oppres- sors." "For more than five years," the Pope added, "humanity had lived a horrendous experience. Tens of millions of people massacred, on the battlefronts, cities razed, slaughter in the air and on the sea, populations ruined by hunger and privations." In addition, he said, "other tens of millions of human beings" were "decimated and destroyed in the concentration camps." He said, the Jewish people" were "con- demned to extermination." The Pope also sent a Passover greeting to the Jewish people in Hebrew. * * * Bar Supplies * Plastic Plates & Bowls * Roll Table Covers * Catering Supplies -Ile Disposable Microproof products 31505 Grand River Ave., Door It * Farmington,Michigan 48024 * * * (31.3) 478-8688'* * **,i***************************** Friday, April 12, 1985 21 MAX THE HANDYMAN Can do anything in or out of the house Former Apt. NY Honors Wallenberg New York (JTA) — Mayor Ed- ward Koch, who Tuesday un- veiled a new street sign honoring Raoul Wallenberg, called on the new Soviet leader, Mikhail Gor- bachev, to disclose the fate of the Swedish diplomat who saved tens of thousands of Hungrian Jews from the Holocaust. Wallenberg was arrested and imprisoned by the Red Army when it liberated Budapest 40 years ago. In a ceremony at the Isaiah Wall across from the United Na- tions, Mayor Koch unveiled a street sign designating the west side • of First Avenue, from 42nd Street to 49th Street, as "Raoul Wallenberg Walk." "It is not clear if we are naming this street in his (Wallenberg's) honor or in his memory," the mayor declared adding: "We would like the Soviet Union to as- certain that." University Pact Bonn (JTA) — A cooperation agreement has been signed in Jerusalem between the Hebrew University and the Academic Center for Jewish Studies at Heidelberg University.
