,rid311 THE 'DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, April 5, 1985 - 79— A HAPPY AND JOYOUS PASSOVER POLINA plastic bags or baskets, each with his lunch for the day — a few oranges or tomatoes, olives, pita bread stuffed with whatever was on hand. Who are these Arabs? Are they heads of families who need the money to feed their children? Are they single, unwilling to do farm work but anxious to earn some money while Jewish boys of the same age are serving in the army? The wages for an eight hour day are the shekel equivalent of $10 with no deductions for social bene- fits, no reports, no income tax. It is all extra-legal. By 8 a.m. on a usual day, most of the husky workers are gone. By 10 a.m. only a few of the older men are left. They open their lunch bags and consume the meal that had been prepared in the village, perhaps five hours earlier. There is no anger, no appearance of dis- appointment. Tomorrow is an- other day. The Arab labor market in Paris Square is duplicated in large cities throughout Israel. The sight stimulates thoughts about long range unemployment, social classes, the Arab problem and frustrations, and Jewish attitudes toward what used to be called "the dignity of labor." The fact remains that the mar- ket seems to fill a function. It pro- vides workers who are needed in the Israel economy. The Arabs come back day after day for what seems to them more profitable employment than anything they can do in their villages.
